CALCULATION FOR HEAT LOSS FOR 33kV OUTDOOR ROOF BUSHING

PANEL
The following formula can be used to calculate the heat loss of the 33kV VCB panel

W = I2xR

Where I is the continuous RMS current in amperes= 630A.

R= R1+R2

R1= рl/A

R1= Resistance of busbar per phase

R2=contact Resistance of 33kV VCB per phase

р= Resistivity of copper

L= Length of copper busbar per phase

A= cross section area of copper busbar

ϴf= Ambient temperature + temperature rise

Temperature rise= 50 ◦ C

Ambient temperature = 40◦ C

In our case

I = 630A RMS

L= 6 m

A= 50x10mm

р = 1.78x10-8 Ωm for copper

= 1.78x10-8 x6/500x10-6

=0.0002136

Rϴf= R20[1+α(ϴf-20)]

R115= R20[1+0.00386(90-20)]

=0.0002136(1+.00386(70))

Resistance of busbar per phase R1=0.000279Ω

Contact resistance of 33kV VCB per phase R2=50µΩ

R=R1+R2= 0.000279+0.00005

=0.000329

=I2*R= 6302*0.00021

Heat loss per phase = 130.58 W

Total Heat loss for all three phase 33kV VCB Panel = 3*130.58

=391.78 W

Hence Total Heat loss of the 33kV VCB panel will be around 400 watts.

Heater calculation for Enclosure

To determine the heating requirement of an enclosure

STEP 1: Determine the Surface Area (A) of your enclosure which is exposed to open air.

Enclosure Dimensions:

Height = 2.390meters

Width = 1.35meters

Depth = 2.150meters

Surface area is 2X2.39x2.150 + 1.35x2.150+ 1.35x2.390

A = 16.4m2

STEP 2: Choose the Heat Transmission Coefficient (k) for your enclosure’s material of construction.

Painted steel =5.5 W/ (m2K)

Stainless steel =3.7 W/ (m2K)

Aluminium = 12 W/ (m2K)

Plastic or insulated stainless = 3.5 W/(m2K)

k = 5.5 W/ (m2K)

STEP 3: Determine the Temperature Differential (ΔT).

A. Desired enclosure interior temp. = 25◦C

B. Lowest ambient (outside) temp. = 18◦C

Subtract B from A = Temp. diff. (ΔT) = 7◦C

STEP 4: Determine Heating Power (PV), if any (generated from existing components, i.e. transformer,
busbar).

PV = 400W

STEP 5: Calculate the Required Heating Power (PH) for your enclosure based on the above values.

If enclosure is located inside:

PH = (A x k x ΔT) - PV

If enclosure is located outside:

PH = 2 x (A x k x ΔT) - PV

PH= 2 x (16.4 x 5.5 x 7) -400

=863W

We will provide four numbers of 200 Watts Space Heaters to achieve 863W.
