Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. He
secures a life-long source of pleasure, instruction and inspiration. My favorite
book is ‘My Experiments with truth’. It is written by Mahatma Gandhi. It was first
published in Gujarati. Then it was translated by Mahadev Desai into English. The
book includes experiments with non-violence, celibacy and other principles of
conduct. Gandhiji stresses that truth is the sovereign principle. According to him,
truth is not only truthfulness in thought alone. Gandhi speaks of his family and his
childhood in an interesting manner. The incidents he narrates are worth reading.
They show that he had great desire for truth even in his childhood. Gandhiji was
influenced by books like “Shravana Pithrubhakthi Nataka” and “Raja
Harichandra”. He strongly opposes child marriage which he himself underwent at
the age of 13.The evolution of Satyagraha is described in detail. It was Gandhiji’s
chief weapon against the British during the freedom struggle. The book throws
light on the freedom struggle and on other great patriots involved in it. Gandhiji’s
greatness lies in his speaking plain truth about his weakness. But Gandhiji rectified
them. That is why he is called Mahatma.

A cloze passage is an exercise where a passage is provided with certain

words missing from it. Actually it is a combination of fill in the blanks and
reading comprehension. It is important to understand the flow and context of a
passage.

Tips to handle Cloze test:

• Read thoroughly: Read the passage thoroughly to get an idea of the passage.

Read slowly and gain an understanding of the text. Once the theme of the
paragraph is clear, it becomes easy to fill in the blanks.
• Link the sentences together: Always remember, it is a passage, so the
sentences are linked to one another. Never make a mistake of treating every
sentence an individual one.
• Type of word to fill in: Look at the blanks carefully and try to assess which
kind of word to put in the blank. Words can be based on grammar,
prepositions, tenses, vocabulary etc.
• Tone: Passage may contain some specific tone like narrative, critical,
sarcastic, humorous etc. So, always make a right choice of a word.
• Negate options: Sometimes, words are too close, eliminating wrong choices
can help.
• Key words: Pay close attention to key words/ clues in the sentences before

DAAD, the German agency for promoting academic exchanges

Electronic mail or email is an easy and effective means of

instantaneous transmission of your information. It requires a computer with an
internet service provider (ISP). Email includes the following:

Comparison between Human brain and the Computer

A living brain can be thought of as a device for processing information. A
computer is a man made device for processing information. The human brain
weighs about 1.5 Kg. whereas the weight of the computer varies from a few grams
to tons. While blood glucose is the source of energy for the human brain, the
computer works on the power drawn from electricity. The human brain needs a
fairly steady temperature for its effective function. On the other hand, the computer
is not very sensitive to temperature changes. Both the human brain and computer
have same number of parts i.e. approximately 10. The human brain has unlimited
capacity of memory. Though the computer also has a vast memory power, its
memory capacity is limited to technology. If the speed of calculation is compared
between the human brain and computer, computer is faster in calculation than
human brain. However, a computer can never function on its own unless it given
commands for operation. Though the computers today have artificial Intelligence’,
no man-made device can ever match the wonderful functions of human brain.

Describe the process of booking a train ticket through an internet:

The process of booking train ticket involves various steps. First, find the name and
number of the train you want to travel and click on "Train Berth Availability"
secondly enter the details of the station you want to depart from and the station you
want to travel to your journey date and class of accommodation . Select the desired
train and class and check the availability of beds. You can also check the train fare and
route at this point. Once suitable train is found to travel on make note of its name and
number. Next, click on IRCTC Online Passenger Reservation Site and register. Select
your train from the list that appears at the bottom of the page and click on
"Book Ticket". Complete the electronic reservation form and click on "Go". You’ll be
shown the details of your booking and you should review these. Click on "Make
Payment". Choose the bank that you want to use to process your payment. Enter and
submit your card details. Your transaction will be processed and you’ll be provided

Describe the process of making chocolates:

Chocolate is a delicious dessert that many people enjoy. It is rich with

antioxidants which keep the immune system in perfect condition. The process starts
from taking cocoa beans, sugar, additional flavor, vanilla and milk. First the raw
cocoa beans have to be roasted for about 30 minutes in 300 degree oven. Then, the
beans are to be cooled and the husks are to be removed. Now the beans can be
broken into small pieces by using mortars and pestle. In the next stage of crushing,
pepper grinder can be used to crush the bean. The beans are now turned into a
brown mush.

 Afterwards, the cocoa bean paste is transferred to a small pan and the pan is
kept in a large pan. The large pan is full of water and it is heated. Then the paste is
transferred to a bowl where mortar can be used till the paste attains its smoothness.
Next, sugar, flavor, milk and vanilla are added. After mixing sugar and flavor,
chocolate is poured into a mould or large pan so that chocolate can be cut into
small bars. The chocolate is then cooled. This can be done at room temperature.
Finally, the chocolate is cut into small bars.

What is Critical Reading?

?/ Critical reading involves presenting a reasoned argument that evaluates and

analyses what you have read. Being critical, therefore - in an academic sense - means
advancing your understanding, not dismissing and therefore closing off learning.

To read critically is to exercise your judgement about what you are reading – that
is, not taking anything you read at face value.

Critical Thinking is an Extension of Critical Reading

Thinking critically, in the academic sense, involves being open-minded - using

judgement and discipline to process what you are learning about without letting
your personal bias or opinion detract from the arguments.

Critical thinking involves being rational and aware of your own feelings on the
subject – being able to reorganise your thoughts, prior knowledge and understanding
to accommodate new ideas or viewpoints.

Critical reading and critical thinking are therefore the very foundations of true
learning and personal development.

Critical Reading v. Critical Thinking

We can distinguish between critical reading and critical thinking in the following
way:

• Critical reading is a technique for discovering information and ideas within

a text.
• Critical thinking is a technique for evaluating information and ideas, for
deciding what to accept and believe.
Critical reading refers to a careful, active, reflective, analytic reading. Critical
thinking involves reflecting on the validity of what you have read in light of our
prior knowledge and understanding of the world.

For example, consider the following (somewhat humorous) sentence from a student
essay:

Parents are buying expensive cars for their kids to destroy them.

As the terms are used here, critical reading is concerned with figuring out
whether, within the context of the text as a whole, " them " refers to the parents, the
kids, or the cars, and whether the text supports that practice. Critical thinking
would come into play when deciding whether the chosen meaning was indeed true,
and whether or not you, as the reader, should support that practice.

By these definitions, critical reading would appear to come before critical thinking:
Only once we have fully understood a text (critical reading) can we truly evaluate
its assertions (critical thinking).

Reading Critically: How Well Does The Text Do What It Does

We can think of a writer as having taken on a job. No matter what the topic, certain
tasks must be done:

• a specific topic must be addressed

• terms must be clearly defined
• evidence must be presented
• common knowledge must be accounted for
• exceptions must be explained
• causes must be shown to precede effects and to be capable of the effect
• conclusions must be shown to follow logically from earlier arguments and
evidence

As critical readers and writers, we want to assure ourselves that these tasks have
been completed in a complete, comprehensive, and consistent manner. Only once
we have determined that a text is consistent and coherent can we then begin to
evaluate whether or not to accept the assertions and conclusions.

Essay on Communication Skills.

Good communication skills are skills that facilitate people to communicate

effectively with one another. Effectual communication engages the choice of the
best communications channel, the technical know-how to use the channel, the
presentation of information to the target audience, and the skill to understand
responses received from others. Self development, interpersonal skills, mutual
understanding, mutual cooperation and trust is also important to set a complete
channel of most effective and winning communication skills. There are mainly three
types of communication skills, expressive skills, listening skills and skills for
managing the overall process of communication. The basic fundamental of all these
types of communication is emotional skills.

Expressive skills are required to convey message to others through words,

facial expressions and body language. Listening skills are skills that are used to
obtain messages or information from others. These help to clearly understand what a
person feels and thinks about you or understand the other person closely. Skills for
managing the overall process of communication help to recognize the required
information and develop a strong hold on the existing rules of communication and
interaction. Importance of communication skills can never be ignored or neglected.
These skills are the key to executing good management skills. With good
management skills, you can have a team of members who together create an
ambience of open communication, concise messages, probe for clarifications,
recognize nonverbal signals, and mutual understanding. Good communication
involves a set of complex skills.

The modern world today, calls for high scale effective communication skills
in order to win the heavy competition in all spheres of life. For effective

and softness. Apart from management professionals, good communication skills are
also required at all stages of life. Effective communication skills are very important
in all aspects of life, be it work or in relationships. People in organizations typically
spend a major part of their time in interacting with people. Thus it is no surprise to
find that at the root of a large number of organizational problems is poor
communications. This is most obvious in cross-cultural situations where language is
an issue.
Often a person wants to say something but communicates something totally
different through vocal intonation and body language. These mixed signals force
the receiver to choose between the verbal and nonverbal parts of the message,
which may not help to get ones message across to that individual because most
often, the receiver chooses the nonverbal aspects.
There are a number of situations when you need to solicit good information
from others; these situations include interviewing candidates, solving work
problems, seeking to help an employee on work performance, and finding out
reasons for performance discrepancies at work. In society it helps in judging an
individual’s ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. Mixed
messages create tension and distrust because the receiver senses that the
communicator is hiding something or is being less than candid. Thus one must
understand that communication skills are not only important to develop an
impression on the other person and get the required work done, but also to not get a
bad idea about themselves in society.
