Bulletin Number 4949

Date: 11/08/04
To: All Konica Minolta Digital Copier Dealers
From: Service Support
Subject: TONER SPEWING PREVENTION
To Correct Copy Quality Issues and Toner Soiling On Copies
10% FOC Program
7155 013 7165 013 FORCE 65 013
Di551 075 Di650 117
Supersedes Bulletin REF. NO. 4949 dated 10/19/04
SYMPTOM(S):
1. Copy quality issues, in particular, white lines on halftone images
2. Toner soiling along the front and rear edges of the copy.

CAUSE:
Refer to the corresponding symptom above.
1. Toner soiling of the charge corona grid due to toner mist escaping from the cleaning unit, caused by
ambient machine air movement from the machine exhaust fan.
2. Toner leaks from both ends of the developing sleeve which drops on
the entrance guide plate of the transfer/separation coronas. High Charge corona
humidity, paper quality, and/or daily high copy volume can reduce the unit

toner transfer efficiency to the copy resulting in toner pileup in the

developing unit.

SOLUTION:
Refer to the corresponding symptom above.
1. To reduce the affect that ambient machine airflow has on the cleaning
unit, a charge corona unit seal is now applied to the PCL as shown to
cover the gap between the cleaning/toner recycle section and the
charge corona unit. This seal prevents toner mist from escaping the Seal Charge corona
unit
cleaning chamber and settling on the charge corona grid.

2. To prevent toner accumulation within the developing unit and subsequent Filter
From developer
soiling, three modifications have been made (refer to illustration): suction Suction fan
a. The developing unit suction fan has been changed to one that provides
greater suction power.
b. The toner filter material has been changed to increase its filtering
ability to reduce the amount of dust that is allowed to pass through.
c. A seal has been added to cover the ducting located on the machine’s
back panel behind the developing fan assembly to further increase
CURRENT
developer suction.

PARTS INFORMATION:
Through April 30, 2005, these parts can be obtained 10% free of charge for machines below the serial
numbers provided on page 2 from the Parts Distribution Center using the special ordering procedure in
this bulletin. Be sure to include on the form the serial numbers of the machines for which you are
obtaining the label. The Parts Center will charge for all parts ordered using standard ordering procedures.
FOC programs are based on statistical percentages of machines that are likely to be affected by certain
modification programs. For percentage programs, the quantity of parts shipped usually is sufficient to
modify all of the machines that need the change. However, if more than the statistical percentage of
machines serviced by any one branch or dealer require a modification, then a FTR (Field Technical
Report, Form) has been established for that purpose. Use the FTR program only if additional parts are
needed. (Purchase the necessary new parts and return the old parts with the properly completed FTR
form to receive credit.) The FTR form is attached to this bulletin. Download it, complete the form, and
return it as instructed on the form.
