Lesson Plan #7

Grade: 5, 6/7, 7/8 Topic: Fitness Lesson Duration: Approx. 35 minutes (2 days)
Overview of Lesson
Students will work though fitness activities in an Amazing Race style.

Inquiry Question:
To what extent does working out help improve our physical fitness/health?
Learning Objectives

Students will…
 Learn exercises that can be used to improve their fitness levels.
 Learn to persevere in order to maintain a high level of effort.
Material and Equipment

 Speaker with music


Lesson Procedure

Introduction (min): 5-7


Expectations for Learning and Behaviour:
 Only use the equipment in which they are instructed to and nothing more.
 Have a high level of work ethic by participating to the best of their abilities within
each activity.
 Be respectful and listen to whoever is speaking.
 Be respectful of the various skill levels.

Introduction Activity:
 Greet student’s in the fitness room.
 Have the students seated to begin the class.
 Inform the class that they will compete in an Amazing Race competition today.
 Amazing Race Instructions:
o I will put everyone in teams of 4.
o There will be different stations spread throughout the class and in the hall.
o Each group will race through each activity to try to be the first team done.
o Each station will have a little card with instructions on what to do.
o Each instruction card will also have a number at the top  Once you finish an
activity, you must go to the numbered activity that comes after the one you
just completed.
o It is important to note that each group member must finish each activity  If
people finish at different times, then provide encouragement and cheer them
on.
o Once you are finished an activity, please make sure to leave the handout in the
same area you found it.
 Activities
o Skipping (hallway)
o Jumping jacks (hallway)
o Medicine ball (class)
o Burpees (class)
o Run (hallway)
o Plank pass (class)

Transition to Body:
 Split the class into teams of 3
 Sort the groups into different stations
Body (min): 25
Learning Activity #1 – Workout
 Begin the Amazing Race!
 Wander between activities and make sure everyone is doing them correctly and
participating.

Assessments:
 Constant observation of student’s effort and participation.

Differentiation:
 Students are always welcomed and encouraged to alter any exercise they are unable
to do.
 All that is asked of the student’s is that they try to the best of their abilities.
Closure (min): 3
 Have the class clean up each activity and have a seat at the front.
 Ask how they liked the activity.
 Thank them for their participation, give 4 high fives, and they’re dismissed.
Games if extra time @ end of class
 Funnel tag instructions:
o Members of the class form a circle with one person staying outside the
huddle.
o The person on the outside has 25 seconds to tag a selected person within the
huddle.
o The huddle must shuffle side-to-side to prevent the outside person from
tagging the chosen player.
o Switch players each round.
