At the end of the study, the students are expected to:
Determine the background of the Author and of the poem.
Analyze and discuss the message of the poem by relating it to real-life
experiences.
Obtain the meaning of the whole poem by means of integrating different
activities.

Who among you here is familiar with man in Student 1: Me Ma’am! He is Jose Garcia
the picture? Villa, the one who wrote the poem entitled
“First, A Poem Must be Magical”.
Good. Do you have any idea about him? Student: He was born in Manila, Philippines
Ma’am.
You got it right! Jose Garcia Villa was born in Student: He is also a critic, short story writer
Manila, Philippines. He came to the United and painter.
states in 1930 and has resided here in Manila
ever since. He is obviously a Filipino poet.
What else do you know about the Author?
That’s great! How about his educational Student: He attended the University of the
background? Philippines in 1929. He first studied medicine
and then switched to law but he is always
interested in writing, and as a law student, he
write short stories and poetry.
Alright! Some of his writing, notable a series
of erotic verse title “man poems” was so
controversial that the authorities at the
University of the Philippines expelled him.
F. DISCUSSION
So, what are the formal elements in “Lyric Student 3: There are meter and rhyme

Great! Actually, there are number of formal Student 4: The meter is regular Ma’am with
elements in the poem. First, it is the meter three stressed syllables per line.
and rhyme. And what do you think is the
meter of the poem?
How about the rhyme scheme of the poem? Student 5: the rhyme scheme Ma’am, as we
had observed is AA, BB, CC and so on.

And last, but not the least, what is the Student 4: In my opinion Ma’am, the
message of the poem? message of the poem is when you tend to
write a poem, it should gain the interest of the
readers, it should be captivating to the eyes
and shows a sense of magic that every time it
is being read, the message in it will embark to
the heart of the readers.
The class will be divided into two groups. Each group will be given a piece of magazine. The
class will be asked to find powerful words that they can use in creating a meaningful poem from
the magazine. All they have to do is to cut it out and paste it in a piece of paper.
Directions: For your activity, you are going to create a magical poem using cut outs of your
choice of words from this magazine.

What have you learned from today’s Student 1: In creating a poem, you should be
discussion? more imaginative most especially on the
choice of words.
For your activity, turn your book on page 37 and answer the graphic organizer, but since you
already learned and discussed the poem, this time, complete the 3 columns right away. Do this
for 5 minutes only in a ½ crosswise.
