Movies and Their Impact on Society

“I’m going to make a name for myself. If I fail, you will never hear of me again”-
Edward James Muggeridge. True to his words he succeeded in making a name for
himself and he created the first movie or “motion picture”. Now if you do not
understand or know what a movie is I will enlighten you as best I can. Movies are a
rollercoaster ride that transcends people into a whole different world fresh out of
somebody’s imagination as seen through the genres of horror, drama, and science
fiction. The movie business has allowed us to break through our burden of everyday
life. Although some movies have created big burdens to carry both physical and
emotional like that of he famous actor Christopher reeves who became paralyzed
while filming the movie superman in 2004. Movies allow us to break our burden of
work and stress because when you have put the kids to bed, done the dishes, cleaned
the house and have finished your taxes you can finally relax sit down and watch an
entertaining movie. Why can we do this? We can do this because the movie business
takes the risks to make a movie so people like you and I can enjoy and benefit from.
In order to understand the significant influence movies have had on our society you
must first take some time to define it.

At the movie high tide in the 1946, before television invaded us, 80 million people a
week went to movies. It was the community habit” (Jack Valenti). However when the
television came around, people going to the movies dropped noticeably. The most
popular movie genre during that time were “R” rated movies typically about war and
were deemed horror. Some movies we watch today can affect society in many, many
ways like violent and horror movies. These movies make people lose their grip on
reality and develop mental health issues. In these “R” rated movies there would
always be propaganda and not the good propaganda either. War movies usually had
big physically fit men as sergeants and they would sometimes if not always be
smoking cigarettes when depicted in these movies. When tobacco companies realized
the rise in there product sells they were happy because they had found the biggest
form of advertisement. No later had movie produces put more smoking actors in there
films that the audience asked for more. The producers and directors gave them more
by putting the use of drugs into there movies to make them more enjoyable or
laughable or “cool” no matter the reason they were corrupting and manipulating the
youth without even knowing it, or did they?

Horror movies are among the most disturbing and unrealistic movies out there. Why
people are drawn to these movies is questionable and confusing. I believe that people
are drawn to these movies because it gives us a rush gets us pumped and our
adrenaline flowing.

“Horror movies originate from fictional work that portrays the dark side of life with
the primary aim of frightening and terrifying its audience. By presenting horrifying
images, of several incorporating sub-genres and repeated themes, such as vampires
and werewolves, demonic possessions, evil children, cannibals and zombies, alien
invasion and mind control, film makers create a world where the worst nightmares
become true” (Sarah). These factors are what drive us to watch these movies because
of the intense rush and out of curiosity. Horror movies like these may sometimes have
such an impact on someone that they act out and loose there grip on reality. These are
what adult audiences experience now imagine what a child or minor would feel, but
this also has an effect on how the person was raised so it all falls into place.

Drug movies often place audiences in uncomfortable positions because they might
have had personal experiences with drugs or other illegal substances. These movies
have a higher impact rate on the youth because to them it’s all about being the life of
the party. Drug movies do teach the young audiences too like the movie “Blow”
which shows the life story of George yung who started out into the drug business but
it ultimately caught him in the long run. These movies have a low impact rate on
adults because they have already experimented or know the truth about these
substances but the young don’t because they are innocent and need to mature.

“One dwells on science fiction” (Ozzy), because it is not a genre but a setting. It is a
setting because science fiction movies are thought up to overcome normal laws of
physics and this is why so many people are drawn to science fiction. Some people are
so drawn to it that they will wait all night in line just to get into the movie “Star wars”
and they even dress up as the characters. The impact of science fiction is powerful
because science fiction movies pretty much make anything possible like flying, or
controlling fire which are talents everyone in the world would love to master because
we all love to be admired and adored and having these powers would make us feel
adored. When you watch any movie you sometimes leave the realm of reality and
begin to think if it’s possible to fly like that or to control fire but the truth is that we
can’t. Although movies like these with strong impacts can be devastating because one
might be so into the movie that they try to fly or try to control fire and end up hurting
themselves and others. One must always be careful and be aware of not to mix reality
with fiction.

Movies have been around now for more than century and have and will continue to
impact us and future generations. From when it was born in 1878 to one of its key
turning points in 1970 where the IMAX wide-screen format premiered in the Fuji
Pavilion EXPO ‘70in Osaka, Japan to present day visual masterpieces like beowulf
the film industry has come a long way in a
short century. I’m certain that we will continue to make awesome movies each time
clearer sound, picture and detail until one day we might be able to “jump” into a
movie via a holographic helmet that will sit you right in the middle of the movie or
join in. Who knows it’s just an idea but that’s how the film industry came to be,
because of an IDEA.
 Impact Of Movies On Children

One of the problems movies have is that they are a popular medium
watched by all. The message incorporated in a film is something,
which is spread worldwide. Heroes like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise,
Leonardo Di Caprio, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzeneggar,
Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, and Jackie Chan are loved and adored
by all and sundry. The things they portray in films are taken quite
seriously by the masses. Therefore, the impact of movies on
children is also very critical.

Movies have a lot of sub genre; namely, action, drama, comedy,

thriller, heist, buddy cop, die hard set-up, action based on science
fiction, and horror. Most of the action, horror and science fiction
movies portray graphic scenes of violence. The graphic scenes,
which show an excessive amount of cruelty and blood, titillate
human minds to commit crimes.

A theory is there that human beings have evolved from killer apes.
War, interpersonal aggression, and graphic violence all show their
relationship to that basis of human evolution. The murderous
instincts are inborn which only need some impetus to come out. The
directors of the films are taking this theory to imprint the story in
the minds of the viewer, not thinking of the impact of movies on
children.

The more problematic section of the audience is the children. They

are in the process of growing up, so anything they see in their
favorite movie is emulated by them. There comes the impact of
movies on children. Objectionable movies are those which are
censured mainly for strong violence, drug and language. When the
youngsters see that their favorite idols are using all kind of
disrespectful deeds and speeches they find it cool.

One of the major attractions of being cool is that children view it as

a tool to impress other children. The sense of judgment takes some
time to grow and when the process of growth is hindered by wrong
messages imparted from a popular mass medium like movies, it
proves disastrous. There are some movies which indulge in
mindless violence. Impact of movies on children is generally known
by the consequences. We have seen that a film like Die Hard is
based on a hostage scenario in a closed place. The recent result is
the Virginia Tech Shooting, where a young boy took the life of 32
others with him inside the institute's campus.

The U.S schools and colleges have seen a sudden rise in killings
inside the educational institutes. Gun violence has increased several
folds. In many cases, they are not even reported. The authorities
have taken many steps to ensure that such crimes do not occur, but
the measures do not ensure that the impact of movies blocked on
the minds of the masses.

Another problem is that the movie viewer identifies himself or

herself with their favorite heroes and villains, particularly in the use
of cigarettes and drugs. Use of strong language is also prevalent in
all the Hollywood films, even in PG-13 movies. It has become
customary to prove a point verbally by the use of profane language,
be it a good man or a baddie.

they can actually have many health benefits. These health benefits include

reduction in the blood pressure and also a reduced risk of various psycho

somatic diseases that can otherwise occur.

This is one negative aspect of movie watching. There have been many

incidences where people who have watched a violent movie tried to enact

some of the scenes that were in the movie. This has led to an increase in

years, doesn’t bother to answer that question. The paper’s top pick, the Lord of the

"impact" has it had, besides on the bottom line at New Line? Yes, it spawned the
Narnia and His Dark Materials franchises and made Peter Jackson a brand-name
director, but I think it’s too early to judge what sort of impact, if any, LOTR will have
on moviemaking or on real life. Besides, there are many other films, including several
on this list, whose legacies are far more apparent.

Some of the list items are indisputable: Pulp Fiction, Do the Right Thing, Titanic,
Fatal Attraction, There’s Something About Mary (the most influential comedy of the
era), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (for inspiring the creation of the PG-13
rating), El Mariachi (for launching the low-budget indie boom), Crouching Tiger,
The Matrix (which surely belongs higher on the list than No. 20), Goodfellas, and sex,
lies, and videotape (which put Sundance and Miramax on the map).

Others are close but not quite there. Mission: Impossible IIIis on the list for showing
that Tom Cruise’s career as the signaturestar of the past quarter century could suffer
some damage from hisoff-screen behavior, but where’s Risky Business, the film that
effectively launched that career in the first place? Toy Story is here as the first all-CGI
film, but where’s Terminator 2, the film whose blend of CGI and live-action became
the norm for most big-budget spectacles? The Bodyguard is here for its massive-
selling soundtrack CD, but where’s Flashdance, whose integration of film narrative
and music (and music-video editing) was much more influential? Fahrenheit 9/11 is
here as the top-grossing documentary, but it’s had less real-world impact than An
Inconvenient Truth or Super Size Me have had (or Sicko may yet have). Where’s
Scarface (pictured), which became the blueprint of so much of hip-hop culture?
Where are such frequently copied movies as Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and The

We tend to show what we have been shown or set an example .Life is like a mirror it is the
same from the day we start realizing the society we show what we have seen .From the
kids if we see Indian Movies serials we always want to the good guy in that .The Indian
Movies are having a negative impression on the youngsters .99% of the movies made are
having a hero oriented subjects .Hero going to any extend to impress the heroine and
heroine always hits back and wants to a fathers own child ..but at last the hero succeeds in
winning heroines heart and there by the movie end "Happy ending" And the other hand TV
serials which shows the elasticity of Indian Family values .It has been stresses to any level
here to there in all four directions just to prove that our family are as height as the statue
of liberty .Here there is a peculiar phenomenon even though a very implicit way it hits
upon the youngsters(Boys at least majority ) that they are always in a loop to impress their
opposite sex and females on the other hand always reject and tend to be or show off to be
family girls .Here one thing that suffers is their Education .Our graduates passed out may
be having very high percentage but majority are junk Their study is result oriented rather
than Goal oriented They would get some previous university question/answers papers and
somehow mug up things and vomit it in the answer sheets. Here I am not worried about the
Female education because it doest make any difference in terms of achievements .But our
young boys should not be carried always by the junk movies we make thinking our ultimate
aim in life is find a beautiful life partner and lead a happy life that should not be the
highest priority in one life .Life should have some goals depending on the interests that
they perceive in their course of life but if all the interests movie centric there our society
will be the same for centuries. Ours being the oldest society our contribution to the
Innovations made by us are just null we are just consumers of their innovations .It all
depend on how a kids grows up and what he is exposed to .Inspirational ,Motivational
movies should be made by which a child can be inspired to do big things in life rather than
singing songs and going behind girls.

Stand and Deliver

The classic teacher movie whose message is very important in today's society: never believe
that students are unable to learn. Instead of teaching to the lowest common denominator,
Edward James Olmos in a true story as Jaime Escalante sets his sights much higher, getting
them to pass the AP Calculus exam. Excellent, enjoyable choice.

Dangerous Minds
Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent as real-life former marine Louanne Johnson. Teaching English
in a tough inner-city school, she reaches the "unteachable" through caring and
understanding. Very true-to-life, Dangerous Minds does not fall into sentimentality but
instead teaches us of the importance of making our own choices and not allowing
circumstances to rule us.
Lean on Me
Morgan Freeman plays Joe Clark, the real-life bat-wielding Principal whose goal was to
bring discipline and learning to EastsideHigh School in New York/st1:place>. While he was
not always the easiest on the teachers, it would sure be nice if more Principals stressed the
importance of discipline and learning in their schools as he did. This film shows the
importance of having strong leadership at the top.

Mr. Holland's Opus

This memorable movie gives all teachers hope that they truly have an impact on their
students. Richard Dreyfuss is wonderful as a musician/composer who must take a teaching
job to support his family. In the end, Dreyfuss' character realizes that he has had as much if
not more of an impact from his teaching as he would have as a composer.

Dead Poet's Society

Robin Williams gives an awesome performance as an unconventional English teacher in a
very conventional (read conservative) private school. His love of poetry and his inspiring
teaching methods have a great impact on his students. The central message of the movie,
to live life to the fullest everyday, is not lost. Further, Williams' poetry recitations are awe-
inspiring.

To Sir With Love

Produced in 1967, this film with Sidney Poitier as a novice teacher has a lot to teach us
today. Poitier takes a teaching position in the rough part of London/st1:place> in order to
pay his bills. Realizing that his students need to be taught important life lessons more than
the curriculum he has been handed to teach them, he throws out the lesson plans and
makes a real impact on their personal lives.

The Miracle Worker

The ultimate teaching miracle, Anne Bancroft is awesome as Annie Sullivan who uses 'tough
love' to get through to the deaf and blind Helen Keller played by Patty Duke. Very few
people can watch the famous 'water' scene without experiencing a feeling of triumph and
relief. Excellent portrayal of the importance of perseverance. Both Bancroft and Duke won
an Academy Award for their performances.

Renaissance Man
Danny Devito's performance as a teacher of the 'Double-D's' is both humorous and inspired.
What appears to be a light-hearted comedy truly has a deeper meaning. Devito's character
proves that William Shakespeare still has much to teach students. Surprisingly clean and
somewhat corny at times, Renaissance Man in the end teaches important life lessons on
responsibility and character.

Music of the Heart

This film shows the influence that one person's drive and vision can have on others. Meryl
Streep plays real-life Roberta Guaspari who moves to Harlem as a single-mother and
becomes a violin teacher. Working through racial and other barriers, Roberta creates an
acclaimed music program in an area where many would have said it was impossible.
Definitely a heart-warming movie.

The Karate Kid

While not normally thought of as a 'classroom' movie, The Karate Kid has much to say to
teachers: Sometimes we have to have our students do things that they will not understand
until much later; Basic skills are most important; Honor and integrity are central to
character; Students need to see us beam with excitement over their achievements. A fun,
nostalgic and inspiring movie to relish.

Aviator

This is one more real time movie about a flight engineer who wanted to make it big .

Kids would be always fascinated and try to excel in their fields only if proper motivated
.I request parents not to show these junk movies hero running behind heroine to your
youngsters and try to make them a family man as you are. Let them be their own and prove
out something in this world.
