MA 210 Course Outline

1. Applications of the derivative: Rates and related rates; Maxima and Minima; Differentials and
applications to approximations.
2. Integration: The indefinite integral; Methods of integration; integration by substitution;
Integration using partial fractions; Integration by parts; Improper integrals; Improper integrals;
Numerical integration; Definite integrals and The fundamental theorem of integrals calculus.
3. Applications of the definite integral: Area under a curve; Area between two curves; Volume and
surface area of solids of revolution; Arc length; Average value of a function.
4. Partial differentiation and applications: Functions of several variables; Partial derivatives; Chain
rule; Total derivative; Maxima and minima of functions of two independent variables.
5. Ordinary differential equations: Fundamental concepts; First order ODEs – variables separable,
homogeneous equations, linear equations, exact equations; Second order homogeneous
differential equations with constant coefficients; Linear second order non-homogeneous
differential equations with constant coefficients; Method of undetermined coefficients.
6. Matrix algebra: Characteristic equation of a square matrix; Eigen-values and Eigen-vectors;
Diagonalisation.
7. Vectors in space: Vectors in three dimensions; vector algebra and applications in 3-space
coordinate geometry; Vector functions of a single variable; Differentiation of vector functions;
Applications to mechanics.
8. Series: Power series; Maclaurin and Taylor series; Convergence and divergence of series; Radius
of convergence; Tests of convergence.
