Question 2 (10%): Theoretical question

An isolated system consists out of two particles with masses m1 and m2 moving with
velocities v1 and v2 . Show that the total linear momentum of the system is constant.

Question 3 (20 pts) A block of mass m1 = 2.0 kg on a rough, horizontal surface is connected to a ball of mass m2 = 1.0
kg by a lightweight cord over a lightweight frictionless pulley, as shown in the picture. A force of magnitude F = 38 N
at an angle θ = 30o with the horizontal is applied to the block as shown. The coefficients of static and kinetic frictions
between the block and the surface are μs = 0.30 and μk = 0.20, respectively. Initially, the block is at rest.
(a) (2 pts) Set your x-y coordinate system very clearly;
(b) (4 pts) Draw a free body diagrams of the block and the ball;
(c) (6 pts) Apply Newton’s 2nd law on both masses and find the equations of motion;
(d) (4 pts) Does the block move? Prove it through calculation. If the block moves, find
the magnitude of the acceleration of the two objects, as well as the tension in the cord;
(e) (4 pts) If the block moves, find the net work done on the block as well as the power
delivered to the block by the force F only during the time taken to cover a
distance d = 2.0 m.

Question 4 (10%): A 50.0-kg block and 100-kg block are connected by a


string as shown in the figure. The pulley is frictionless and of
negligible mass. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the 50-kg
block and incline is 0.250. The 50-kg block moves from A to B, a
distance of 20.0 m

Question 5 (10 %) A ball is tossed from an upper-story window of a building. The ball is given
an initial velocity of 8.00 m/s at an angle of 20.0° below the horizontal. It strikes the
ground 3.00 s later.
(a) (2 pts) Draw a picture illustrating the physical situation and specify your coordinate
system as well as its origin clearly;
(b) (2 pts) How far horizontally from the base of the building does the ball strike the
ground?
(c) (2 pts) Find the height from which the ball was thrown.
(d) (4 pts) How long does it take the ball to reach a point 10.0 m below the level of
launching?

Question 6 (10%) An object of mass m = 0.5 kg starts from rest and


slides a distance d down a frictionless incline of angle  = 30.0°.
While sliding, it contacts an unstressed spring of negligible mass as
shown in figure. The object slides an additional distance x = 0.25
m as it is brought momentarily to rest by compression of the spring
(of force constant k = 400 N/m). Find the initial separation d
between object and spring.

Question 7 (15 pts) The mass of the right-hand side puck in


the figure is 20.0% greater than the mass of the left-
hand side one. Before colliding, the pucks approach each left-hand side
other with momenta of equal magnitude and opposite puck

speed of 20.0 m/s. Find the speeds of the pucks after the

rotates about the z-axis with an angular speed of

the system about the z-axis and (b) the rotational
kinetic energy of the system.

Question 9 ( bonus 7 pts ) A light rigid rod 1.00 m in length joins


two particles, with masses 3.00 kg and 4.00 kg, at its ends.
The combination rotates in the x-y plane about a pivot through
the centre of the rod (see figure). Determine the angular
momentum of the system about the origin when the speed of
each particle is 10.00 m/s. What happens to the angular
momentum when we double the length of the rod ?
