COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory course in basic computing theory and practice with a special focus on
developing an understanding and appreciation of the various applications of computers and
information systems in businesses. Emphasis is placed on learning about technologies both
contemporary and those still at the prototype stage in order to develop an understanding of how
business needs drive the development process. The theoretical portion of the course is
complemented with practical learning in the usage of a word processor, spreadsheets,
presentation, and desktop publishing software. The course also aims to equip students to learn
various other useful skills such as contact management, time management, profile and resume
management, bibliography management, smartphone and computer productivity, computer
troubleshooting.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To develop an understanding of how Information and Communication Technology has an
impact on business
2. To equip students with the technology skills that are necessary in the current work
environment
3. To develop the ability to efficiently and effectively leverage the skills learned to
positively impact their personal and professional lives
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After having completed this course successfully, participants will be able to:
1. Gain an understanding of the underlying concepts and fundamental theory of computer
science.
2. Evaluate and appreciate the evolutionary development of various cotemporary hardware
and software technologies
3. Extrapolate and link currently available computing resources with under-development
technologies that will potentially revolutionize the industry
4. Demonstrate competence in the usage of common office productivity software including:
MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
5. Conceptualize and design newsletters, brochures and magazines using desktop publisher
software such as MS Publisher
6. Develop and maintain their online resumes on LinkedIn and leverage it to develop their
professional network
7. Utilize MS Outlook, Google Calendar and Contacts to manage and automate their
appointments, meetings and personal contacts
8. Familiarize themselves with cloud-based services and storage such as Google Drive
(Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms), Dropbox, MS Office 365 and Apple iCloud
9. Employ smartphone apps and services to improve their personal productivity
10. Perform system maintenance of their personal computers and smartphones

LEARNING METHODOLOGY
Mixed methodologies shall be put in practice for comprehensive learning. It includes pedagogy and
andragogy. For this purpose the class format includes lectures, case studies, audio-visuals, readings
from journals and magazines, online articles, and guest speakers and hands-on experience with
various software. Hands-on practical approach shall be taken to equip students with the skills
necessary to leverage office productivity software to perform routine and ad-hoc tasks.
