Course Description:

English IV is a language course aimed at facilitating the achievement of the general

competences for level B1 of the Common European Framework, described as
follows:
The learner will be able to partially
 Understand the main points of clear texts in standard language if they are
about topics with which they are familiar, whether in work, study or
leisure contexts.
 Cope with most of the situations that might arise on a trip to areas where
the language is used.
 Produce simple, coherent texts about topics with which they are familiar
or in which they have a personal interest.
 Describe experiences, events, wishes and aspirations, as well as briefly
justifying opinions or explaining plans.

Approach and Methodology:

Our approach is based on the concept of Communicative Competence defined as the

ability to use language correctly and appropriately in order to achieve communication
goals in specific contexts.
The ultimate goal of our language courses is to enable learners to express themselves
confidently, accurately and fluently in speaking and writing and to understand spoken
and written language as used in the world today in a variety of settings. Our
methodology will, therefore, facilitate such goals by creating communicative
opportunities in each lesson through a variety of techniques (debates, role-plays,
projects, integrated-skills tasks, etc.) These activities will be based on communicative
functions needed for everyday life.
Successful language learning also requires a great deal of learner autonomy. Through
Pearson Education’s online platform MyEnglishLab, our learners will engage in
multiple learning activities based on the communicative functions explored in class.

Competences:

 The learner can discuss cultural issues

Language functions: Functions are the means students need to master the target
language through the study and practice of grammar structures and vocabulary use in
real-life situations. Functions will enable students to use language well in different
contexts by exchanging messages with different people at different register levels.

My English Lab (MEL):

On this platform, students will practice all different aspects learned in the different
lessons cover each unit, as in a workbook. Activities will be assigned weekly by the
teacher, and they are to be done on the assignment link and not on the course link.
Feedback will be provided by the teacher on a weekly basis. As a result, all students
are to buy the book since the first week of class to be able to complete the
assignments and for further language practice.

Performance: This category includes only two aspects as follows:

Homework assignments: The number of activities the student completes during a term
in a semester, these activities must be correlated with the functions and competences
per midterm.

Commitment (Portfolio and shared assessment): This category is related to how much
the student is willing to learn and to complete the assigned activities, this is a
negotiated and shared assessment, which is “An important process within Formative
Assessment is Shared Assessment (SA), which refers to student involvement in the
assessment and learning practice, a process of dialogue and collaboration between
teacher and students aimed at improving the learning process, both individually and
collectively” (López & Sicilia, p. 2, 2013). For this purpose, students will work with a

Mid-term Exam: The mid-term exams will be oral in all of the terms. In case you
cannot take one due to health issues, please bring the corresponding medical excuse
the next following day in order to take the quiz on a different assigned day agreed by
the student and the teacher.
