Based on Table 1.1, there are four segments out of ten that have 100 values of PCI
which is lies on Grade A. This is because, the survey was conduct at rural area and there
is not busy, where less vehicles going through this road. Therefore, from this study, we
did not find any damage throughout the four segments. According to Standard PCI
rating scale, the road that gained a Grade A should been given routine maintenance as a
measure to maintain the good condition of the roads.
Secondly, based on the PCI calculation that had been obtained and observed as
above, it can be conclude that there are five segments out of ten segments which are lies
on Grade B. It also can be classified as satisfactory level which is only need preventive
maintenance. This road is located at street light number 30, 54, 42, 6 and 18. Edge
cracking, potholes, longitudinal and transverse cracking, patching, and alligator cracking
were the damage that can be seen at there.
Based on the survey that had been conducted, this visit area are located around
UTHM Bestari residential college, Jamiah Seafood restaurant and Taman Maju Bistari
residential area, thus make it has the largest amount of vehicles which are pass through it.
The result from the phenomena is tire contact pressure on the pavement. This can be
proved when the vehicle is moving on pavement, a pressure developed between the tire
and pavement. If the tire is low pressure tire, then contact pressure will be greater than
tire pressure. This will become worse when the vehicle moves at creep speed. It will
cause smaller strains on the pavement.
Besides, the amounts of precipitations that are discharge around this area bring
some effects of the pavement of the road. Moisture variations or precipitation from rain
affects the depth of groundwater table that will cause potholes. Good drainage facilities
should be provided for good strength and support. Then, longitudinal cracking are
typically resultant of natural causes or traffic loading compared to transverse cracking
12
which may cause by low temperatures, hardening of the asphalt or cracks in underlying
pavement layers
In general, edge cracking is a result from lack of support of the shoulder due to
weak material or excess moisture. To overcome this problem, the cracks may be filled at
low severity and as the severity increases, patches and replacement of distressed area
may be needed. Patching defect can lead to a more widespread failure of surrounding
pavement and semi-permanent patch should be placed to overcome this problem. Next,
alligator cracking is caused by failure of the surface layer or base due to repeated traffic
loading which eventually lead to disintegration of the surface. It is usually associated
with base or drainage problems. To overcome this problems, for small areas may be
fixed with a patch or area repair meanwhile for the larger area require reclamation or
reconstruction.
Last but not least, first segment within interest on street light 1, has level of service
(LOS C) which can be scaling as fair. Shoulder drop off, patching and potholes are
failure that had occurred. This is because of few factors that should be fixing by some
rehabilitation. Shoulder edge drop off can occurred when a road is resurfaced without
adequately raising the height of the shoulder. Meanwhile, potholes are form through
prolonged water intrusion from existing cracks in the surface.
In the nutshell, PCI score for 1 kilometers of Jalan Maju Bestari is 87.1, which mean
that this road condition level is 87.1% defeat and the segment with worst condition is the
first segment and the segments with best condition are third, fifth, seventh and ninth
segment.

5.0 CONCLUSION
Most of the project involves the renovation towards the existing road. The possibility of
increasing the damage pavement if the density of traffic in the area are increased. This is
happened because every grade pavement has maximum load has been borne in a time
span. If the excessive load imposed on the pavement then it wil undermine the nature of
pavement itself. There are four segment out 10 that have values of PCI that lies in Grade
A. This 4 segment considered Grade A according to Standard PCI rating scale and
should been given routine maintenance to maintain the good condition as it should be.
The weather and the condition of the surface on the pavement also contributed to the
damage of pavement. Within long-term, if no use is taken, this will be an infected water
deeper and eventually effect and endanger road users. There is five segment out of 10
which is categorized as Grade B. Grade B classified as satisfactory range from 85 to 70
and this 5 segment of this project is rating between 83 to 78 which is in the range. For
the first segment within interest on street light 1, considered as level of services (LOS C)
and scaling as fair because it is in the range between 70 to 55.
Regular monitoring should be carried out by all revelant parties to ensure that the road
are in good conditions and pavement damage rates in Maaysia are minimal. This is
because the safety of the road users be guranteed if the state of the roads are in good
condition and safe to use, especially in the area of the village and neighbourhood. In this
project we conclude that Jalan Maju Bestari has three categories over the 1 km that we
studied which is each categories need to be repaired to prevent road damage.
