To Whom It May Concern:

With great pride, I would like to offer my insights on the character and teaching caliber of
Justin Fletcher, my student teacher for World History at Middle College High School for the
2019-2020 academic year. I have known Mr. Fletcher since he was my student in 9th and
10th grade English at MCHS. He was a phenomenal student who exemplifies creativity,
scholarliness, and leadership. He served as part of Student Body (ASB), School Site
Council, ECO Club, KidSingers and several community service events. As a high school
student, he contributed richly to the academic and social culture of MCHS to promote a
positive learning environment. For his dedication, he earned the highly prized AVID
scholarship, which helped pay for his undergraduate education.

In his capacity as a student teacher, he brings his knowledge, integrity, and professionalism
to continue enriching our students. I am impressed with his thoughtful lessons and use of
technology to make World History vibrant and relevant to our students. Mr. Fletcher has
done an exemplary job student teaching in World History. He began in August and will
complete his student teaching in June; I am grateful for the experience of working with Mr.
Fletcher.

I value his dedication and commitment to excellence in his teaching. Using best practices, he
engages the students by being observant and considerate of their learning modalities. For
instance, he uses gamification strategies to make the Industrial Revolution exciting. He
tailored Kahoot games with rich questions and modeled for the students how to create
questions of their own to facilitate ownership of learning. For Jeopardy games, he actually
bought response buttons so the students can have fun buzzing in while reviewing concepts in
the chapters. I commend him for teaching the students how to formulate critical thinking
questions using higher order thinking verbs. In addition, he incorporates academic
conversations through Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs, and panel discussions to
encourage the students to view and question history from multiple perspectives. The
students also appreciate working with Document Based Question (DBQs) projects as

formative assessments. Mr. Fletcher has command of teaching strategies and offers timely
feedback to support student learning. The DBQs help the students become researchers and
scholars through practicing writing persuasive responses with authentic cited sources.

In addition to instructional scaffolding and differentiated learning, Mr. Fletcher also nurtures
his students by being aware of their Social Emotional Learning needs. In fact, he takes a
hands-on approach by reviewing student performance, connecting with students one-on-one
in conferences, making home contacts when necessary, and sharing his concerns with
counselors to get resources to the students. Creating a support system for these students
empowered them to excel academically while promoting wellness.

Furthermore, during this experience with COVID-19, Mr. Fletcher demonstrates his agility
with technology and distance learning. He structures his Zoom classes effectively and
engages the students with multimedia platforms like Flipgrid, Padlet, Screencast-o-matic,
Google Forms, and other instructional tools to keep the students motivated and interested in
learning during a difficult time. Mr. Fletcher conducts himself with professionalism in our
faculty meetings and Zoom sessions; the faculty at MCHS respects his knowledge, ideas,
and contributions to our problem solving sessions. In essence, he fits right in with the
faculty, understands the mission at MCHS, and has the respect of all our faculty.

Mr. Fletcher has all the requisite skills and qualities of an innovative, caring teacher who
values education and has a passion for teaching. Throughout his teaching experience at
MCHS, he exhibits depth of character, intellectual curiosity, kindness and compassion
towards his students. Through leadership by example, he invites students to excel in their
own studies while kindling a love for history. Unequivocally, Justin Fletcher is a teacher
who has the heart and the drive to transform the lives of our students by investing his
humanity to ensure their success. I know that he will be a valuable asset to any educational
institution and respectfully offer my strongest recommendation with gratitude and love for
his work at Middle College High School. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me.

Sincerely,

Maryanne Thomas,

Social Studies Chair
