Lecture No: 14

Foundation Design in SAFE

Example:

Consider a column of 18” x 18”, under a load of 100 kips.

Let B.C = 1.0 ton/ft2

As; K = 36 × B.C ------------------ (1)

Where; K = Modulus of sub grade reaction

Since; 1 Ton = 2204 lbs or 2.204 kips

So, K = 36 × 2.204 = 80

Let the depth of footing below the G.L is 4 ft and thickness (assumed) of footing is 1 ft

Thus; qu = 2.204 – 4(0.120) – 1(0.150) = 1.57 kips/ft2

A = P/qu =100/1.57 = 63.6 ft2

So proposed footing is 8’ × 8’

NOTES:

• Long term deflection multiplier will be taken as 3

• How to select bar spacing after the design of area of steel?

Let the area comes 8.04 in2

଼.଴ସ
= 1.07 where ‘8’ in denominator is the dimension of footing

Since # 6 bar = 0.44 in2

ଵ.଴଻
= 2.29
଴.ସସ

ଵଶ
= 5.2’’ c/c

• In SAFE if punching shear is < 1.0 then the thickness of footing is considered to be OK

Design Steps:

1. File > New model from Temp. > Single footing

Type X and Y.

Concept of X & Y, if you have total dimension is 8’ then from center line, 4’ is from left edge side
and 4’ from right edge side.

So in this case (in inches)

X = 48

Y = 48

2. Define > Slab Properties > Load > Modify > type thickness > OK

3. Define > Soil Support > Select soil > Modify > Type ‘K’
> OK > OK

K = 36 × B.C

4. Delete the existing column

5. Placing of new column > pick the tool ‘Draw rectangular slab/area’ from left vertical tool bar >
now click the point where you want to place the column

OR

Draw column using ‘draw column’ tool

6. Define > Static load cases & Combo

7. Select slab > assign > Soil support > Soil > OK
8. Assign > Point load
9. Type load in Z Load (downward possitive)

Size of load (in size of load you have to type the dimensions of column)

Let X direction = 18”

Y direction = 18”

10. Run Analysis & Design
