Tutorial Week 2 Solutions

(1) The stress tensor for the given infinitesimal cube is σ = [20 0 15; 0 10 0; 15 0 -30] MPa. (2) The principal stresses for the given infinitesimal element are σ1 = 6 MPa, σ2 = 5 MPa, and σ3 = -1 MPa. (3) The principal directions are θp2 = 45° and θp3 = 135° in the x-y plane, and σ1 is in the positive z direction.

Q3. Determine the principal stress and principal directions of the following infinitesimal
element:
6 - z-plane 6 - x-plane

2 - y-plane 2
y y
3 3 x o 3 3 x o
2 2
z z

Soln
Step 1: Determine convention of sectional plane in the current coordinate system (all are
negative planes, see the figure)
Step 2: Determine the stress tensor
2 3 0

[ ]
σ= 3 2 0
0 0 6
Step 3: Calculate the principal stresses
σ zz=6 is a principal stress since both of its shear components are zero. But we cannot say
σ zz =σ 3=6 simply from its orientation. We need to calculate the other two principal stresses
and then rank them:
2 2

σ p=
( σ xx+ σ yy )

√[ 2
( σ xx−σ yy )
+σ =
2+2
2 ]
±
( 2−2 )

xy
−1 √[
+3 2= 5 MPa
Step 4: After ranking these three principal stresses, we thus have:
] {
σ 1 =6 MPa ,σ 2=5 MPa , σ 3=−1 MPa
Step 5: Calculate the principal directions
2 σ xy 2( 3 )
tan2 θ p = = =∞
σ xx −σ yy 2−2
There are two roots:
2 θ p=90° , 270 °
θ p =45 ° ,135 °

Step 6: Determine which of these two angles goes with which stress:
σ 2=σ xx cos 2 θ p 2+ σ yy sin2 θ p 2+ 2σ xy cos θ p 2 sin θ p 2
σ 3 =σ xx cos2 θ p 3+ σ yy sin2 θ p 3 +2 σ xy cos θ p 3 sin θ p 3

σ 2=5=2 cos 2 45° +2 sin2 45 ° +2 (3 ) cos 45 ° sin 45°

σ 3 =−1=2 cos 2 13 5 °+ 2sin 2 13 5° +2 ( 3 ) cos 13 5 ° sin 13 5 °

Therefore, θ p 2=45 ° ,θ p 3 =135° (rotation in the x-y plane relative to the x-axis)
The direction of σ 1 is in the positive z direction.
