Introduction:
Inferring involves taking information from the text and merging it with our
own thinking to come up with an idea on understanding vocabulary words
within text.
This lesson will help you to use background knowledge and text clues to figure
out the meaning of new words in any text of your choice.

Objectives:
 Infer the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues.
 Distinguish compound words, clipped words, blended words and affixes.
 Compose clear and coherent sentence using compound words, affixes, blended words,
clipped words and context clues.
 Apply new vocabularies and context clues in inferring unfamiliar words.

Compound Word – comes from two different words that have been put together to form a new
word with a new meaning
Compound words may be:
Closed Compound Words – written as one (e.g. someone, airplane)
Open Compound Word – written with space between
(e.g. hot dog, time out)
Hyphenated Compound Word – connected by a hyphen
(e.g. mother-in-law)
Ways on how to identify the meaning of (compound) words:
Word part – the root word, prefix and suffix of a word
Synonym – words that are similar or related to the another word
Antonym – a word opposite in meaning to another word
Context clues - hints that help define a difficult or unusual word. The hint may appear within the
same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence.

Compound Word
Direction: Box the meaning of the compound words. Use the context clues or the given
synonyms and antonyms in the sentence.

Root word – the original word or the based word


Affixes – words or syllables added before or after a root word to form a new word.
Prefix – is an affix placed before a root word or base word to form a new word. Adding prefix to a
root word changes its meaning.
Example: ex-governor = previous governor
underweight = less weight
prehistory = before history

Negative Prefix – is an affix that gives negative meaning to a word.
Example: disagree = not agree
unsolved = not solved
Suffix– is an affix placed after a root word or base word to form a new word. Adding suffix to a
root word changes its meaning.
Example: boyish = like a boy
