TITLE/TOPIC:The Indefinite Integral

I. INTRODUCTION: In this chapter, we shall study the inverse of differentiation and its various
applications.

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

a. Find the integral of a function f(x).
b. Differentiate a function f(x) given its derivative.
c. Integrate a function applying the basic integration formulas.

III. COURSE CONTENT:

a) The indefinite Integral
b) Basic Integration Formulas

IV. LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Terminologies:
a) Differentiation – is the process of finding the derivative or differential of a given function.
b) Integration – the inverse of differentiation.
THE INDEFINITE INTEGRAL

∫ F ( x ) dx=f ( x ) +c
Where: F(x) dx - integrand
f(x) + c – integral
- Integral sign
C – constant of integration or arbitrary constant
BASIC INTEGRATION FORMULAS

 General Properties of Indefinite Integrals

1. ∫ du=u+ c
2. ∫ ( du+dv +dx +…+ dy )=du+ dv+ dx+ …+dy
3. ∫ c ∎ du=¿¿c ∫ du
GENERAL POWER FORMULA :Applicable to all functions except when n = -1.

n un +1
∫ u du= n+1 + c
Where: u – the base
du – the exact differential of the base.
n – the exponent
Note: 1.The general power formula is used only if du is the exact differential of u.
2. A constant (but never be a variable) maybe introduced into the integrand provided that its reciprocal is
introduced before the integral sign.
Illustrative Examples:

1. ∫ 100 x 99 dx
Solution:
Let u = x
n = 99
du = dx

x 99+1
*** ∫ 100 x 99 dx = 100 ∫ x 99 dx = 100 [ ]
99+ 1
+ c = x100 + c (final answer)

2. ∫ x 2 dx
Solution:
Let u = x
n=2
du = dx

2 x 2+1 x3
*** ∫ x dx = ∫ = + c Final answer
2+1 3
3. ∫ ( 15 x 4 −6 x 2+2 ) dx

= 15 ∫ x 4 dx−6∫ x 2 dx +2∫ dx
