Experiment No.
Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to introduce the student with circuit simulation using
Proteus.
5.1 INTRODUCTION:
Simulation is a mathematical way of emulating the behavior of a circuit. With
simulation, you can determine a circuit’s performance without physically constructing
the circuit or using actual test instruments. Proteus is a complete system design tool that
offers a very large component database, schematic entry, full analog/digital simulation,
etc. it also offers a simple easy to use graphical interface for all design needs.
5.2 PROCEDURE:
1. Open Proteus ISIS Schematic Capture

2. Select the Component Mode from the left Toolbar
3. Click On P (Pick From Libraries)
4. Add all the required components
5. Place the components on the workspace
6. Wire up the circuit
7. Click on Play Button on the bottom left to start simulation
We will now try to learn about Multisim simulation techniques by solving a simple example.
We will build and simulate the circuit shown in Figure 4.2 using Proteus as shown in video
attached.

i) FIRST STEP (PLACING THE COMPONENTS)

a) PLACE A BATTERY (DC SOURCE) IN THE PROTEUS WORKSPACE:
 Open the proteus software if it is not open. In the component Toolbar, select ISIS
part to open a grid lined new window.
 Now bring your cursor in the left side of workspace area and click on P (Pick Devices).

b) PICK & CHANGE THE VALUE OF VOLTAGE SOURCE
 After clicking on pick devices search your component and double click on it. The
selected component would be shown in the devices part of main screen. Now close the
searching bar and right click on battery written in devices bar then right click on the
main screen window. To change the voltage level edit the properties of DC Voltage
source.
c) PLACE A RESISTOR:
 Bring a resistor in the Proteus workspace.
 In the Component Toolbar, select resistor desired as shown below in Figure 4.5.
 Now edit the properties of resistor.
 For example: type 30k to move directly to the area of 30kohm list.

d) CHANGE THE NAME OF RESISTOR:

 Double click on the resistor, a new window with the name Resistor will open Select
Label from the menu of this window. Change the name of R1.
e) ADD OTHER RESISTOR R2:

 Place resistor R2 of value 20kohm in the workspace through the same procedure.
f) ROTATE THE RESISTOR:

 Select resistor ‘R2’ and right click from mouse and select rotate clockwise to rotate the
resistor This will make the resistor vertical. Labels and values of all the components
can be dragged individually. Drag the label ‘R2’ and value ‘20kohm’ individually to
put at a proper place.
g) PLACE GROUND:
 You can select the ground form the left panel (Sub circuit mode)of window as shown
in figure.

ii) SECOND STEP (CONNECTING THE COMPONENTS)
a) ARRANGE THE COMPONENTS PROPERLY:
 Arrange the components according to the circuit given in Figure 4.2. You can select and
drag the component to any place in the workspace. Select the components and drag them
one by one to proper places.
b) CONNECT DC VOLTAGE SOURCE:
 Bring the cursor close to upper pin of “Vs”; cursor shape will change to a plus sign. Click
and move a little upward. A wire appears, attached to the cursor. Click again at a small
distance above the “Vs” source. Notice that the line will change direction. Control the
flow of the wire by clicking on points as you drag. Each click fixes the wire to that point
as shown in Figure 4.10. in this way, when the cursor reaches the pin of R1 click again,
this will connect “Vs” to “R1” in a nice manner. Notice that a node number is
automatically given.

c) CONNECT “R1” TO “R2”:

 In the same way connect R1 to R2 through the same procedure.

iii) THIRD STEP (PLACING MULTIMETER OR VOLTMETER IN PARALLEL

TO MEASURE VOLTAGE)
a) TO CONNECT A MULTIMETER:
Move the cursor to the probe mode to select the current and voltage probe. After
selection point it to the side where measurement is required
iv) FIFTH STEP (SIMULATE THE CIRCUIT)

a) SAVE THE FILE.
 Select File Save
b) SHOW THE SIMULATE SWITCH, ON THE WORKSPACE
Move the cursor to the play button given on left below corner to see the results.
