Task This worksheet introduces a range of scenarios that require the use of specific types
of language. Work in groups of three and explore what words and phrases are most
appropriate to use for each role and situation.

When you have completed the role plays, discuss:


• Which scenario was the most difficult and why?
• How would you describe the ways in which your language changed to suit
each role?

Scenario 1: A birthday party for five year olds

Roles: One parent (host) and two 5-year-old guests

Action: Two guests arrive and are taken to the party room for the birthday tea. Host needs
to take coats and check that guests like cake and chocolates.

Scenario 2: A dinner party for senior colleagues from work

Roles: Host hoping to get a promotion and two senior colleagues from work

Action: Host needs to welcome guests and check that Italian cuisine is acceptable to all.

Scenario 3: An end of year celebration for teenagers finishing examinations

Roles: Teacher (host) and two 16-year-olds

Action: Teacher needs to welcome the teenagers and show that this evening is for them to
enjoy and relax after five years of hard work.

Scenario 4: A fire drill in a department store

Roles: Shop assistant and two shoppers who are wearing new clothes

Action: Shop assistant needs to give clear instructions to the shoppers to get them into the
car park and lined up at the assembly point as soon as possible. The shoppers are
not sure about wearing the clothes they have not paid for and want to change back
into their own clothes.
