Tutorial For Week 8: WWW - Maths.usyd - edu.au/MATH1011

This document provides a tutorial for Week 8 of a calculus course. It contains 5 practice problems involving concepts like plotting surfaces, finding critical points, taking partial derivatives, and finding and classifying critical points of multivariable functions. The tutorial covers graphing surfaces defined by equations of the form z=f(x,y) and analyzing their properties at different points.

1. This question asks you to plot the graph of z = x2 + y 2 + 1 using slices.

(a) (i) Set y = 0 and plot the resulting curve z = x2 + 1 in the xz-plane.
(ii) Set y = 1 and plot the resulting curve z = x2 + 12 + 1 = x2 + 2 in the
xz-plane.
(iii) Set y = −1 and plot the resulting curve in the xz- plane.
(iv) Set y = 2 and plot the resulting curve in the xz-plane.
(v) Set y = −2 and plot the resulting curve in the xz- plane.
(b) Now on a 3-dimensional graph, redraw your answers to the previous part in the
respective planes y = 0, y = 1, y = −1, y = 2, y = −2
(c) Hence plot the graph of z = x2 + y 2 + 1.

2. Let f (x, y) = x2 + 3xy − y 2 + x − 5y + 25. Find all the points of the surface z = f (x, y)
at which the tangent planes to the surface are horizontal.

3. Consider the surface, S, defined by z = 10 − 2x2 − 2y 2 .

(a) Show that z ≤ 10 for all x, y.
(b) Describe the curves which result from the intersection of S and
(i) the (x, z)-plane;
(ii) the (y, z)-plane;
(iii) a horizontal plane z = k, where k is any constant < 10.
∂z ∂z
(c) Evaluate and at the point (0, 0, 10).
∂x ∂y
(d) Calculate and describe the tangent plane to S at the point (0, 0, 10).
(e) Describe what is happening at S at the point (0, 0, 10).

4. Consider the function f (x, y) = 5 − 6x2 − 12xy − 13y 2 .

(a) Find fx , fy , fxx , fyy , fxy .
(b) Show that (0, 0, 5) is a critical point.
(c) Show that the curves which result from cutting the surface S, defined by z =
f (x, y), with the planes x = 0 and y = 0, are both concave downwards at all
points.
(d) Show that z ≤ 5 for all x and y.
Hint: Expand (2x + 3y)2 .
(e) Describe the tangent plane at (0, 0, 5).

1
(f) What sort of critical point is (0, 0, 5)?

5. Find and classify all critical points of the function

f (x, y) = x3 + y 3 − 3xy.
