    INTERLOCKING PAVER BLOCK MIX DESIGN

    Presently, we have satisfactory mix design for interlocking


    paver block grade 55, and results are presented to EIL/DORC
    CIVIL earlier.
    The mix details are given below for 1cum
    Cemen
    t 450
    Sand 604
    10mm 475
    6mm 663
    C dust 151
    water 174

    Since handling of 6 ingredients is difficult at new block plant,


    we are proposing revised block mix design in line with IS
    10262 and SP 63 guidelines for interlocking concrete block
    pavements using 4 ingredients.
    Mix proportioning details for 1cum are :
    Grade of cement : Type I Dangote cement
    Maximum size of coarse aggregate : 10mm
    Minimum Cement content : 380kg
    Maximum water cement ratio : 0.38
    Workability : 0-25mm slump
    Sp. Gravity of Cement : 3.15
    Sp.Gravity of Coarse aggregate: 2.7
    Sp. Gravity of sand : 2.51
    Water absorption : Coarse aggregate-0.6%
    Water absorption – sand – 1%
    Target strength for Mix proportioning
    TMS = fck+KS
    Fck = 55 MPa
    K=0.85 ( IS 15658 :2006)
    S=3.5
    TMS = 55+0.825X3.5 =57.88, SAY 58 MPa

    As per IRC SP -63-2004, water cement ratio should lie


    between 0.34 to 0.38 for production of concrete block
    pavement
    Let us adopt 0.34( As strength requirement is high 58MPa)
    Let water content be 6 percent of total mix ( IRC SP 63)
    Density of Concrete =2400kg/cum ( IS 456-2000)
    Water content = 2400x6/100= 144 litres
    Calculation of Cement content
    Cement = Water/W/c Ratio
    = 144/0.34
    =423.5, say 424 kg

    Determination of Coarse and fine aggregate


    Total Concrete Volume = 1 cum
    Assume 2 percent air ( IS 10262),
    Actual concrete volume =0.98 cum

    Volume of Paste
    Vpaste = Cement/Sp.gravity of cement + Water/Sp. Gravity of
    water
    Vpaste =(424/3.15 +144/1)/1000
    Vpaste = 134.6 +144 =278.60/1000=0.279cum
    Total Volume of aggregate =0.98-0.279
    = 0.701cum
    IRC SP 63 recommends sand to coarse aggregate ration as
    60:40. If during trial mix, if mix is to be modified combined
    aggregate grading can be adopted.
    Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.701*0.40=0.28
    Volume of sand = 0.701 *0.6 =0.421
    Weight of Fine aggregate = 0.421 *2.51*1000=1056 kg
    Weight of Coarse aggregate = 0.28*2.7*1000=756 kg
    Mix proportion
    Cement: 424 kg
    Water : 144 kg ( extra water for water absorption to be
    added (1056x1/100+756x06/100=15.1 litre)=159.1
    Sand: 1056 kg
    10mm : 756 kg
    TRIAL NO. 2
    CHANGING SAND TO COARSE AGGREGATE AS 50: 50
    Mix proportion
    Cement: 424 kg
    Water : 144 kg ( extra 14.48 litre for absorption =158.48)
    Sand : 880kg
    10mm: 946 kg

    TRIAL NO. 3
    CHANGING SAND TO COARSE AGGREGATE : 45:55
    Mix proportion
    Cement : 424 kg
    Water :144 + 15.3=159.3
    Sand : 792 kg
    10mm : 1230 kg
