Detailed Solutions

1. Multiplying first equation by 4 and second by 3 and adding,

we get : x = 1. Putting x = 1, we get y = 1. Ans.(4)
2. Multiplying 1st equation by 5 and 2 nd by 3 and adding we get x = 1.
Putting x = 1 in 1 st , we get 4 × 1 –3y = 7 or y = –1. Ans.(4)
3. Multiplying 1st equation by 2 and 2 nd by 3 and adding we get x = 3.
Putting x = 3 in 1 st , we get 2 × 3 + 3y = 12 or 3y = 6 or y = 2.
So, x = 3 and y = 2. Ans.(4)
4. By cross-multiplication, 2nd equation becomes 2x + 2y = 11. Now multiplying 1st equation by 2 and
adding to this equation, we get 4x = 12.8 or x = 3.2.
Putting x = 3.2 in 1 st equation, we get y = 3.2 – 0.9 = 3.2. Ans.(1)
5. Adding given equations we get 29 (x + y) = 116 or x + y = 4.
Subtracting given equations, we get 5 (x – y) = 10 or x – y = 2.
Solving x + y = 4, x – y = 2 we get x = 3 and y = 1. Ans.(2)
6. Multiplying each term of 1st equation by 6, we get 4x – 3y = –1.
Multiplying each term of 2nd equation by 6, we get : 3x + 4y = 18.
Solving these equation, we get : x = 2 and y = 3. Ans.(1)

1 1
7. Putting = u and = v, the given equations becomes :
x y
3u + 6v = 12 and –4u + 12v = 44
i.e. u + 2v = 4 and u – 3v = –11.
Solving these equations, we get u = –2 and v = 3.

1 1 1 1
∴ = – 2 and = 3. So, x = – and y = . Ans.(4)
x y 2 3
