Topic: The impact of unemployment in Belfield.

Objectives: The researcher intends to achieve:

1. The number of unemployed residents in Belfield.
2. The challenges associated with finding a job.
3. The effect on the village as a result of unemployment.

Overview
Unemployment has been an issue not only in my community but nationwide. This
being, because unemployed individuals have no source of income, they resort to
crimes to gain some sort of money. This however is mostly prevalent among the
youths that have recently, within 1-9 years, graduated from secondary school and
sought no higher form of education. This has resulted and a significant percentage of
youths being incarcerated with petty crimes before they “have a chance to live”.

Methodology
This research was conducted with the help/ use of a questionnaire to acquire the views
and insight of unemployed individuals in Belfield. There were twenty volunteers in
the conduction and completion this survey. The survey consisted of 16 questions.
These comprised of 10 enclosed questions and 6 essay type questions.

Type of Data
 Quantitative: Quantitative data is any data that is in numerical form such as
statistics, percentages, etc. The researcher examines the data with the help of
statistics and believes the numbers will yield an unbiased result that can be
generalized to some larger population.

 Qualitative: Qualitative data is data that is observed and can generally not be

measured with a numerical result. It is contrasted to quantitative data which has
numerical attributes.

 Quantitative Research- this method of data collection was chosen because it

provided a simple and accurate way of acquiring data and made it easier to
quantify the respondents’ views.

Discussion

Based on the data collected majority of the unemployed individuals are between the
ages of 16-21.
Views on Higher Education

 Nineteen of the 20 residents interviewed that intend on achieving a higher form of

education intend to do such to improve their qualifications, while the one
respondent that doesn't intend on achieving higher education said that they can
get by with just basic secondary school education.

Effect on the Village

 Eleven respondents had their contribution to the household affected by their lack
of a job while nine did not.

 Sixteen of the 20 respondents stated that there was a high crime rate in their
community as a result of unemployment.

 Twelve respondents believed that there was a link between crimes and
unemployment in their community. Sixteen respondents believed that crimes
were being committed by unemployed individuals.

Conclusion
From our findings, it is evident that unemployment is most prevalent among the
younger adults and those that haven't sought or think of seeking higher education. It is
also noticed that unemployment is higher among the males than the females.
However, for those that are employed, their job is not what they planned on doing but
is primarily just a source of income. As such, we conclude that it is difficult to find a
secure job without a form of education higher than what the secondary school
provides.

Recommendations

 Young adults should be provided with more opportunities to attend programs

which will supply them with a higher form of education, thus improving their
qualifications.
 Young adults should seek some form of higher education or work experience.

 Employers should be more willing to accept recent graduates to give them some
form of working experience.
