Function and general features 00 – 28/07/17

1.0 Function, features, assembly and operation

This specification concerns the function, the main features and the assembly and operation of the
terminal box Type SM2-LA. Environmental and operating conditions depend generally from the
compatibility of the materials and components and from the surface finish.

2.0 Function
The measurement, control, check and data recording circuits for medium and high power, oil-
cooled, oil-insulated electric transformers require signals to be brought outside the tank; in some
cases these signals are carried by fiber optics cables.
The terminal box Type SM2-LA is designed to allow the fiber optics cables to enter the tank and at
the same time protects the external part of the fiber optics cables from mechanical and environ-
mental damages.

3.0 Construction features

The terminal box Type SM2-LA consist of a flanged casing, closed by a cover. The bottom of the
casing has threaded holes in which the fiber optics feedthrough component can be mounted; the
space inside the terminal box allows to mount the fiber optics cable without sharp bends. The ter-
minal box features two M50x1,5 cable entries.
3.1.0 General features
 Flanged casing with lowered bottom to prevent air pockets; the casing has two M50x1,5 cable
entries and is closed by a cover; protection degree of the box is IP 65; identification labels in-
side and outside the box allow identification of terminal box as well as of the fiber optics ca-
bles;
 The terminal box is supplied with the number and pitch of threaded holes requested by cus-
tomer;
 The threaded holes are numbered are numbered on both sides to ease cabling and allow iden-
tification; on request the holes can be identified as specified by the customer.
3.2.0 Materials and finish
 Casing and cover of aluminium casting, painted with one coat of epoxy primer and one finish-
ing coat of polyurethane paint, colour RAL 7031; the epoxy primer is compatible with mineral
transformer oil at a temperature of up to 120°C, the paint passes the 500 hour salt fog test;
 External screws and washers of stainless steel;
 Cable entries are closed by plastic plug during shipment.
3.3.0 Operating conditions
Materials, components and design allow the terminal box Type SM2-LA to be used in the following
conditions:
 Environmental temperature with standard gaskets - 20°C to + 50°C
 Relative humidity 95% at 20°C; 80% at 40°C; 50% at 50°C
 Protection degree of box IP 65
 Operating temperature (mineral oil) -20°C to +110°C
Special executions can be supplied for following environmental conditions and operating tempera-
tures:
 Environmental temperature - 60°C to + 55°C

3.4.0 Test
Following tests and controls are performed on boxes before despatch:
 Control of correct numbering of threaded holes

4.0 Assembly and operation

It is advisable to prepare a wiring plan for each terminal box before assembling, showing the identi-
fication of the terminal box, which can be engraved on the terminal box identification plate, and the
correspondence between the fiber optics cable identification and the number of the threaded hole.
The feedthrough components of the fiber optics cable are then screwed into the threaded holes; it
is advisable to perform a tightness test to make sure that there is no leakage at the thread.
Terminal box Type SM2-LA is then mounted on the transformer tank as follows:
 the fiber optics cables inside the tank are first connected to the feedthrough on the bottom of
the terminal box in accordance with the wiring plan;
 the terminal box is then bolted to the tank; the flange O-Ring gasket assures oil-tightness;
 the external fiber optics cables are then led inside the terminal box through the cable entries,
there to be connected to the external part of the feedthrough; each cable has to be connected
to the feedthrough following the numbering previously set up;
 when the wiring is finished close the cover of the terminal box.
