Background of the study

The issues about depression are very frequent nowadays especially in student of
Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS) because of different problems they are facing
on their everyday lives commonly due to academic matters and daily activity.
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that
negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act according to
American Psychiatric Association (APA). Depression is a mood disorder that causes a
persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. The student of Ormoc City Senior
High School (OCSHS) is more prone to depression because of the daily activity the
students experience specially during night instead of sleeping early the student choose
to study in order get higher score during quiz specially during exam or making a project.
If the student that are lack of sleep they will be stress and stress leads to depression.

According to Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MFMER)

symptoms of depression on teens, symptoms may include sadness, irritability, feeling
negative and worthless, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling
misunderstood and extremely sensitive, using recreational drugs or alcohol, eating or
sleeping too much, self-harm, loss of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of
social interaction. If you feel depressed, make an appointment to see your doctor or
mental health professional as soon as you can. If you're reluctant to seek treatment, talk
to a friend or loved one, any health care professional, a faith leader, or someone else
you trust. Because sometimes depression leads to suicide. According to World Health
Organization (WHO) Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is
one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout
the lifespan. Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at
population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts.
There are indications that for each adult who died by suicide there may have been more
than 20 others attempting suicide.
This concept paper seeks to analyze and interpret the cause and effects of
depression among students and address what solutions that could possibly lessen the
contiguous issue of depression that leads to suicide. In doing this, we can educate and
promote awareness to every students and help a student who experience depression.

Literature Review

Depression is a medical condition that can affect a student's ability to work,

study, interact with peers, or take care of themselves. Symptoms of depression may
include: difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, appetite changes, withdrawing from
participating in activities once enjoyed, feelings of sadness, hopelessness,
unhappiness, and difficulty concentrating on school work. Symptoms of depression can
also lead to thoughts of suicide ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ASSOCIATION OF
AMERICA (ADAA). Depression is one of the most widespread diseases across the
world and a major factor in problems of mental health (Sarokhani et al., 2013). The
issue of students’ mental health is a global problem that covers all developed and non-
developed societies, both modern and traditional (Bayram & Bilgel, 2008). During their
academic life young people face many contradictions and obligations to succeed,
especially at university (Arslan, Ayranci, Unsal & Arslants, 2009). Also, university
students should make the efforts to embrace new experiences and changes in social
aspects, and in behavioural, emotional, academic and economic situations (Ginwright &
James, 2002). Therefore, it is important to understand concerns regarding students’
mental health. The mental health problems of students are widely studied at different
educational levels, such as college and university (Bayram & Bilgel, 2008). A number of
studies have indicated a high prevalence of mental health problems among students,
including depression, compared to the rest of the population (Yusoff et al., 2013). More
importantly, recent studies in this area indicate that the psychological and mental
problems of students continue to increase (Field, Diego, Pelaez, Deeds & Delgado,
2012). For example, in the United States a national survey in 2005 mentioned that 86%
of university counselling centres noted an increase in serious mental health and
psychological problems among university students (Gallagher, Weaver-Graham & Tylor,
2005). One of the most prevalent problems of mental health is depression, which is
a serious health problem among the student population (Ibrahim, Kelly, Adams &
Glazebrook, 2013). Moreover, depression has a significant impact on academic
performance, academic satisfaction and academic achievement (Arslan et al., 2009). A
study by Wechsler, Lee, Kuo and Lee (2000) reported that students with symptoms of
depression achieve lower grades and are less active in the classroom relative to
students who do not have these symptoms. The findings show that depression is a
serious problem that requires psychological support for the Depression among students.

Statement of the Problem

This paper aims to know the causes and effects of depression among students
who excel on their academics on Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS). This
concept paper specially aims to explain and answer the following questions:
1. Does talking to someone an effective way of curing depression?
2. What are the causes of student depression?
3. What are the things that make a student experience depression?
4. Does school works and activity cause depression?

Abridge methodology

This study seeks to find out what are the causes and effects of depression
among the students of OCSHS. Case studies and exploratory analysis towards
depression is conducted. This involves random sampling among 20 students on
OCSHS in all TVL-ICT strands, either Grade 11 or Grade 12 students. The research
instruments use are surveys, providing questionnaires the respondents who are willing
to participate.
Timeline

This concept paper is planned to be done only for 6 days. In 6 days of finding the
causes and the effect of depression, we can make a solution to lessen the numbers of
students who experience depression.
