HILL SIDE SCHOOL WEEK 3

PAGES 204-206

LESSON NOTE FORMAT FOR 2013 ACADEMIC YEAR PERIOD/ WEEK FIFTH/ 3

TEACHER`S NAME: TEKALIGN TESHOME

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY

GRADE 10

CHAPTER/UNIT: FOUR

CHEMISTRY IN INDUSTRY AND INVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

TOPIC: NITROGEN

LESSON objective: after completing this section, the students will be able to describe the
extraction, properties and uses of nitrogen.

SUMMARIZED NOTE

OCCURRENCE: It is found free in nature in the atmospheric air (78%). It is also found in animals and
plants. The mineral sources of nitrogen are salt peter and Chile salt Peter.

EXTRACTION: industrially, nitrogen is produced by fractional distillation of air.

In the laboratory, nitrogen is produced by thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrite.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: it is colorless, odorless; tasteless slightly boils at -196 degree Celsius.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: less reactive non-metal due to nitrogen- nitrogen triple bond.

It reacts with active metals, with hydrogen and oxygen.

USES: it is used to create inert atmosphere. Liquid nitrogen is used to preserve blood, bull`s semen
and different foods.

The most importance of nitrogen is for the production of ammonia.

REMARK: Dear our students please try to read your text book, note and solve the given questions.

TELEGRAM EXERCISES/HOME WORK

 GIVE SHORT ANSWERS FOR THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1. What are the sources of nitrogen in combined form?
2. List some chemical reactions of nitrogen.
3. Explain the uses of nitrogen
4. Describe how nitrogen is produced in industry and laboratory.
5. Why is nitrogen underactive non-metal?

GRADE 10

CHAPTER/UNIT: FOUR

CHEMISTRY IN INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

TOPIC: PHOSPHORUS AND OXYGEN

LESSON OBJECTIVE: after completing this section, the students will be able to describe about
phosphorus and oxygen.

SUMMARIZED NOTE

OCCURRENCE: Phosphorus does not exist free in nature. It occurs as calcium phosphate, Fluor apatite.

OXYGEN- is found as free element in air. There is around 46.6% by mass of oxygen in the earth crust.

EXTRACTION- White phosphorus is obtained by heating Ca3 (PO4)2 with coke and sand at high
temperature. Red phosphorus is produced by heating white phosphorus in the absence of air at 300
degree Celsius.

Oxygen is produced in industry by fractional distillation of air. In the laboratory, oxygen is produced
by decomposition of H2O2, KClO3 and HgO .

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: Phosphorus is found in two allotropic forms. These are white and red
phosphorus.

OXYGEN- is colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. It has two allotropes. These are O2 and O3 .

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: Phosphorus reacts with metals and non- metals. Oxygen reacts with all
elements except; noble gases and inert metals.

USES: Phosphorus is used for matches, fireworks, smoke bombs and fertilizers.

OXYGEN- is used for oxidizing agent, production of steel, production of metals, in oxyacetylene
welding and biological treatment of waste water.

REMARK: Dear our student`s, please try to read your note, text book and solve the given questions.
