BEIL0011: Healthy Planning

Date and Time: Monday 17 August 2020 @ 1-5pm

Format: Online Exam

1. Time allowed – four (4) hours.

2. The exam must be completed and submitted via the Turnitin portal within the four (4)
hours.

3. This examination paper PDF has four (4) pages.

4. Total number of questions – seven (7).

5. This exam is in two parts – Part A (one question); Part B (six questions).

6. You must answer each part of the exam – answer one question from Part A and four (4)
questions from Part B.

7. Total marks available – 100.

8. Each question is worth the same mark (20).

9. The exam is open book – but you must do the exam on your own – there can be no
collaboration. See UNSW exam rules (including online exams):

10. Set up a separate word file or pdf for your answers. Clearly label your file with your
name, ZID and the questions attempted.

11. Submit your finalised exam file via the Turnitin portal before the 5pm deadline.

12. Use headings to organise your answers. There is no word limit for the answers but as a
guide a minimum of 200-250 words is required – up to 500 words per answer will be more
than sufficient.

QUESTION ONE

Clearly define what healthy planning is referencing the four domains commonly used by built
environment professionals working in this area. From your disciplinary perspective (the
degree you are studying – clearly state what this is) answer the following:

i. How will you include healthy planning / healthy built environments in your work?
Illustrate your answer with specific examples.
ii. How might you coordinate with other like-minded professionals?
iii. What are some of the challenges you might encounter in working with other
professionals from different disciplinary backgrounds, especially those from health?

QUESTION TWO

Loneliness is increasing for many people in the community. Considering age, equity and
ability, who in our community is particularly susceptible to loneliness? Why is this the case?

Linking to the specific groups you have identified above, what are some of the main
contributors to loneliness?

Finally, using the healthy built environment domain of social connection, provide at least
three examples of built environment interventions that can assist to reduce loneliness and
isolation (assume that COVID is not an issue). Explain how these interventions can be
implemented and how success will be determined.

QUESTION THREE

Being physically active is one of the most important behaviours for reducing the risk for
chronic disease. Considering both mental and physical health, discuss the following points:

I. What famous British study led to the first understandings of how physical inactivity
can contribute to heart disease?
II. What is the current thinking on how much physical activity an individual should do
each day?
III. What ways can transport planners reduce physical inactivity? Use specific examples
of built environment interventions, including those to reduce long commuting
distances.
IV. How can we increase physical activity across the community? Consider the role of
green and blue space in increasing rates of physical activity.

QUESTION FOUR

In April 2017 ‘The Lancet Planetary Health’ journal was launched. Why was this especially
important for health professionals? What about built environment professionals? What does
the term ‘planetary health’ mean (in your own words) and what are the biggest health
concerns arising from environmental degradation? What does the term ‘co-benefits’ mean
and how can actions for climate change enhance people’s health? In your answer give
specific examples and include reference to natural and built shade. Finally, what are the
SDGs and how do they relate to human and environmental health?

QUESTION FIVE

You are the newly appointed advisor to the State Minister for Futures and keen to impress.
The Minister has been asked to convene a high level thinktank across five key government
departments: health; urban planning; climate change; transport. The focus of the thinktank is
life in urban environments post COVID-19. Outline the key issues that the Minister will need
to address in the plan to ensure that the community can keep healthy and well both physically
and mentally. Consider the following issues (but don’t feel you have to be limited to these):

• Promotion of community health – both the immediate acute concerns regarding the
virus and longer-term chronic disease reduction
• Transport – the continued use of public transport for daily commuting
• The need to keep people physically active and socially connected while physically
distancing in their local neighbourhoods
• The implications of working from home
• Equity across the generations and the socio-economic divide.

QUESTION SIX

What are the main health implications of housing – both the individual dwelling and its
locality? How do economic issues (both housing affordability for the individual and
government assistance to house vulnerable people) directly affect health? With specific
reference to disadvantaged communities, how can we improve people’s health through their
housing?

QUESTION SEVEN

Companion and service animals provide health benefits for many people in the community.
Discuss this statement including reference to the following:

• What is the difference between companion and assistance animals – give specific
examples of both.
• What are the main physical and mental health benefits for humans of companion and
assistance animals – clearly identify the range of benefits of both types of animals.
• What are the challenges of keeping companion and assistance animals in increasingly
dense cities where more and more of us live in apartments – how can we ensure that
our animal friends are healthy and happy in these environments?
