As the famous saying goes

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you
feed him for a lifetime.

We must begin with the very word “doctor” and examine our professional
identity. Etymologically, the word “doctor” in Latin means “teacher” and is
derived from “docere,” meaning “to teach.” Thus, a doctor is primarily a
teacher. Healer, resident, consultant, attending, professor, and so on are all
various other layers of identity that ought not to eclipse a doctor’s basic identity,
that is, a teacher.
This teachers day , we are here to not just thank our teachers 'on paper'. Thank
anyone and everyone who have contributed in making us what we are. Not
every teacher needs to be called ma'am or sir and not every teacher needs a stick
to teach you a lesson. Experiences with certain people often turn out to be our
greatest teachers and should be cherished.
Chanakya, a minister in the Maurya dynasty and one of the greatest teachers off
all times, spoke about the need for teachers in nation building. He said that this
nation will become independent, liberal and forward, when the teachers it has
guides it properly. A teacher will become successful when he will be able to
build the character of a person more than anything.
Teachers are the first guiding step in this big bad world. Without a mentor over
our heads, a guide to distinguish right from wrong, we will all be bodies without
spirit.

While growing up, the only person we tend to respect after our parents, are our
teachers. Because the greatest lessons are learnt in the classroom, in our case its
hospital, bed side. Even though many times we feel that they are less helpful,
but somewhere after a decade, everything starts coming into practicality, and
hence our bookish lessons come to life.

We should like to share two other thoughts. The word “teaching” is generally
used in the context of medical students and residents. However, teaching our
patients is just as important an obligation and expectation. In many ways, this is
an even more neglected area of education than is medical education. We as
doctors are not educated enough to be as competent and effective as educators
(teachers) as our patients expect us to be. Simplifying technical jargon and
effectively communicating to our patients are cornerstones of our therapeutic
alliance and a duty. Finally, teaching is not just about being a successful
professional; role modeling is first about the successful person without the
white coat.

Dr APJ Abdul kalam once said. "The creativity is indeed the result of the
education process and the environment of the school and above all the teachers'
capability igniting the minds of the students. The essence of it can be seen in the
following verses: Learning gives creativity, Creativity leads to thinking,
Thinking provides knowledge, Knowledge makes you great."

About the aims of a teacher, he said, "The aim of the teacher should be to build
character, human values enhance the learning capacity of children through
technology and build the confidence among children to be innovative and
creative which in turn will make them competitive to face the future."
The teachers carry a huge responsibility of shaping the young minds!
A teacher,
ignites the young mind
nurtures the sprouts to take strong roots
clears the weeds of ignorance
helps the bud blossom into a flower!
A teacher,
Is a beacon of light guiding
like a candle who burns selflessly
to light a thousand new ones
enlightening the eager minds!
Whether we realise it or not, a teacher is the most important influence in our
life. A teacher is not necessarily one who has taught us in our school or college;
they are our parents, mentors and friends too.
Whosoever I have learnt from has been my teacher, I would say. Some I seek,
some I unconsciously attract. Often I learn by observing others. They are all my
teachers, even though some may be completely unaware that I am learning from
them. Many of us in Quora, from whose replies I have learnt are also my
teachers. I cant name them all, but I offer my gratitude to them too.
The best teachers are those who show us where to look but don’t tell us what to
see. Because good teachers educate us and the right education is to know where
to look. What we need from education is to awaken intelligence in us.
Intelligence is the capacity to perceive the essential, the truth that is all around
us but hidden from our view. To awaken this capacity in oneself and in others,
is education. Teachers deliver us this education.
There is really no end to education. It is not about reading a book or passing an
examination and say that “my education is finished”. Education never ends. It
cannot end. The whole of life, from the moment we are born to the moment we
die, is a movement of learning. That is what education brings to us; it brings
learning.
On this Teachers day I thank all my teachers, who knowingly or unknowingly
have given me wings to fly!
Teaching is a sense of satisfaction, inspiration, motivation, happiness,
completeness , values, respect, joy and at times regret, that you couldn’t do
more. There’s a feeling of responsibility, a requirement of reciprocation, a
feedback and some pulls and pushes. It’s a job for some, but for the rest
teaching is preaching. Knowledge is bigger than religions. It’s the teacher who
imparts its base i.e., information, and helps to understand possibilities,
imaginary and kills myths. A teacher therefore, always looks to impart, to give
all what he has and in return asks for nothing, except Attention.
