Utility system is the heart of any manufacturing Industry.

It comprises of Boilers, compressors,


chillers , Pumps , Cooling towers which are essential to Run the Plant process related applications.

Boiler is the heart of Utility system , In goa Companies Such as MRF uses Steam For Tyre curing
process , Zuari agro has power generation unit , Syngenta uses Steam for process related
requirements. These companies have large Boilers of over 20TPH (tonnes per hour) capacity. Besides
this Boilers are commissioned in Various Pharma and other industries where heating process are
required.

Boiler

Boiler is a steam Generating Device and essential for meeting Heat related application of the
process. High pressure Boilers are used for Power Generation.

Although a very crucial Equipment challenge lies in its safe and efficient working.

Following are the safety concerns of the Boiler which can lead to catastrophic failures.
1. High operating Pressure :-Power Generating Boilers generally operate at a pressure of 105
bar or higher to produce superheated steam. Boilers are fitted with Safety valves to keep
pressure from rising Beyond threshold. Incase of Failure of safety valve there is Risk of Boiler
detonation which can significantly affect surrounding infrastructure and even Human lives.

2. Fuel:- Generally boilers used Pulverised coal as a fuel for Firing. Which involves
transportation of coal powder from site to boiler , this can pollute the environment and also
has risk of fine particles entering human respiratory system.
3. Emission :- Generally By-products of Combustion are sulphur and Nitrogen gases(SOx &
NOx), which gets mixed with Water to form sulphuric and nitric acid, which when comes in
contact with skin can cause burns. Also they are highly corrosive gases and eat away the
metal structures.
4. Noise:- Generally boilers have auxiliary components such as suction Blowers which in
Operation Produce Sound unbearable to the Human ears hence its placement is also crucial.

Also in case of boiler Pressure exceeding beyond Threshold limit Safety valve gets opened
and steam leaves at high velocity producing sound in the range of 150-170db. Human ear
can bear sound Upto 120 db. Beyond which can cause irreversible damage to ear drum.
Hence Use of silencers for the safety valve exhaust is preferred.
5. High temperature/Pressure Fluids:- Boiler Produce High pressure steam which is used for
power generation via turbines. If there is any steam leak in system it can deal significant
damage to Operating personal. Also superheated steam when condensed transforms into
saturated steam/water Mixure which when accidently splashed can cause burns.
6. Rotating Equipment:-Pumps are High Speed rotating Devices used for transportation of
Pressurized fluids , it can cause Physical injury if left unguarded.
