WORK PROGRESS
The reason for change in our method of cooling from phase change material to provision of air
channel for doing forced convection is because, we talked to Jayakrishna Sir about the project
idea and he pointed a slight shortcoming in our approach. He said that Phase Change Material
would melt and would not be able to absorb any heat in case if surroundings were at a higher
temperature than the melting point of the PCM.
We have started our analysis of solar cell, and inorder to achieve that we drawn the cad
geometry in the Design Modeler of Ansys. We have further researched on the topic of provision
of air flow on solar cell. Till now we have learnt the following in Ansys software.
Create a sketch in a plane.
Extrude(Add material or Frozen) it and carry out various body operations on it.
Provide necessary properties like density,Thermal Heat Capacity and Conductivity to the
different parts of materials that we will be using in the PV cell.
Select the various faces of the part to provide Named Selections. This will be utilized to
specify the fluid domain and the necessary boundary conditions later on in Ansys Fluent.
Import the Part to mesh. And check for the mesh quality such as Aspect ratio, Skewness
and orthogonal quality, which are the parameters that determine whether the mesh is
good or bad.
We are yet to go through the workings of Ansys Fluent and the postprocessor to carry
out the necessary simulations.
Calculate irradiation at a particular location from formulae as described in the textbook
Solar Engineering of thermal Processes.
Carry out thermal analysis of PV cell model in ansys.
A temperature plot was obtained for radiation and convection boundary conditions.
The temperature plot was first obtained for PV cell without fins.
Then the temperature ditstribution was obtained for various spacings between the fins.
It was observed that with increase in spacings between fins the temperature distribution reduces.
Then the temperature plot was obtained for various lengths of fins.
It was observed that with increase in the lengths of the fins the temperature distribution reduces.
Then the temperature plot was obtained for various thicknesses.
It was observed that with the increase in thicknesses the temperature distribution increases.
Future Work
Carry out CFD analysis inside an air duct using Ansys Fluent.
Use the data from Ansys fluent to Ansys Thermal and obtain the value of optimum speed of air
for optimized fin parameters.
