SELF- LEARNING MODULE 1.1
Quarter: FIRST Teacher: Mrs. Flordiliza M. Ocariza, LPT

Subject: ENGLISH Grade Level: GRADE 10

Module Title: “SPEAK UP & BE HEARD” Time Frame: (date intended for this module)

INTRODUCTION / OVERVIEW:
This module is crafted with the 21 st Century learners in mind, specifically, the Grade Ten (10)
learners.
It is envisioned that as Grade 10 learners, they are expected to have mastered practical English
language skills and have developed literary appreciation. Thus this module is designed to expose 21 st
century learners to the symbiotic relationship that operates between language and literary appreciation.
This relationship is framed within the principles of communicative-functional approach, where students
engage in language processes, such as attention to linguistics codes, information sharing, and negotiation
of meaning in particular social context and for particular purposes. Such approach lays the groundwork
for the understanding and appreciation of literary texts.
This module contains several lessons intended for the indicated learning competencies. In each
lesson, there are three (3) important parts, the Pre-lesson, the Lesson proper, and the Post lesson. The
Pre-Lesson engages the learner through a pre-assessment activity, which will serve as a point of
identifying his/her prior knowledge. The Lesson Proper is where the learning activities are provided.
They are also given the opportunity to explore technologically-driven 21 st century skills, such as ICT
manipulation and media literacy. Graphic organizers and multi-media links are provided in the
discussions and evaluations/assessments in order to develop systems thinking and self-directional skills,
which are both integral in the modern language and literature classroom. An engaging scenario offers the
opportunity for students to apply the skills in different context and various forms of media with an
accompanying rubric as a guide for evaluation. The lessons are supplemented or enriched with a film,
documentary viewing, or clip showing that utilizes various forms of media and technology. By attaining
proficiency in these skills, learners are fitted out to meet the new demands of the society in which they
live. Finally, the Post Lesson gives the learners the opportunity to check understanding and evaluate
one’s output and self-learning opportunities using set of criteria or rubrics.
Thus, it is aimed that as Grade 10 learners, you will find the purpose of language and literature not
just a work of art but you may look into it with a significant human experience that will allow you to
grow and become a better God-centered, truth seeker, community builder, and servant leader.
