Benchmark- Literature Assessment Plan

Professor Meredith Powers

One of the ways that I will use formative assessments in my elementary class with these

three lessons would be by journaling. I am able to formatively assess students by simply asking

students a question about our previous day’s work with specifics from the lesson. I will read all

entry’s and reply to students with encouragement and correction if needed. This will allow for

me to assess the students’ knowledge about the lesson taught them and get a better understanding

of what students remember, and if they are retained the information that was intended of the

lesson given the day before. Formative assessments are an amazing way for educators to assess

students and have them perform without the stress of being assessed or tested on what they have

learned. As far as a summative assessment, I will be having an end of unit chapter test using the

information we have been learning in this lesson. This will cover the complete content that has

been used and will allow students to have a mor formal assessment. It will be interesting to

compare the two assessments, especially since this will help me to better understand what

students are retaining.

One of the best summative assessments that I will definitely use in my classroom would be to

use a rubric to help students’ performance their best, but also to look for those key answers I am

looking for. They will have the information they need to answer questions and details regarding
chapter test they will be taking. They will have the chance to have a copy of this rubric the day

before so they know what they may have to study for. This rubric will be made up using

questions that I come up with regarding the chapter and specifics that were made to stick out to

them in reading, writing, speaking, views, listening, and even their thinking process.

An integral part of educational now a days is anything that is digital. I would love to be able to

assess students using the epic! application. The reason I would love to use this is because this is

an excellent way to encourage students, there are so many students that have learned so much

with the internet and applications that have been created to help them learn. “Technology is

something that most, if not all, kids enjoy, so it's easy to see how engagement and motivation can

be boosted through its use in the classroom. Elementary students may easily become bored with

traditional lectures, textbooks and written assignments since they result in a more passive

learning environment” (Com, S. 2. 2003).

Because I am able to choose the formative and summative assessments that will be performed in

my class, and I know the needs of my students. I will be able to tweak these assessments no

matter if summative or formative. I can make notes and ask questions that are more formative, æ

students with disabilities and to formative assessment. For students to be actively involved in

their learning, they must understand a learning goal, aim for it, and use assessment evidence

along the way to stay on course. Three key formative assessment questions — Where am I

going? Where am I now? What do I need to do next? — are important for all students, including

students with disabilities, as they partner with their teachers to produce successful learning

outcomes” (Schopp, M. 2017). At the end of chapters I require students to answer fill in the

blanks as well as multiple choice questions that will come from the text or information provide in

the lesson/chapter.
Some of the most effective assessments for the elementary classroom are using strategies like

visualizations, cooperative learning, and inquiry-based instruction. These will be used by me and

I know they can definitely act as a guide for students to use once they are problem solving

individually. “The classroom is a dynamic environment, bringing together students from

different backgrounds with various abilities and personalities. Being an effective teacher

therefore requires the implementation of creative and innovative teaching strategies in order to

meet students’ individual needs” (Hyginus, Lei, Imen, Milly, Kumar, A., Bonyai, K., . . . Grimes,

L., 2020, September 17).

Reflection:

As mentioned in the MCEE rationale, “In the United States there are 50 separate measures of

what constitutes misconduct by professional, certified educators. Each state or jurisdiction has its

own laws and rules, and thus as a nation, we are often challenged by the variances in both the

process of discipline when an educator has misbehaved as well as the basic tenets upon which

discipline may or may not be issued” (TEC, N., 2020., MODEL CODE OF ETHICS FOR

EDUCATORS .MCEE).  In order for my students to have the best and most professional

education in my class, It is important for me to understand what I can and cannot do in certain

circumstances.

Because of this I will dedicate my professional life to be “committed to the profession of

teaching and learning. I will be professionally active, lifelong learners and seek opportunities for

professional development” (University, G. C., 2015).

This is why nationwide teacher conferences and ethical meetings are important in understanding

do’s and don’ts an ethical manner. As an educator you have so much responsibility with children

in general that is nice to learn how to work with all students from all diverse backgrounds. It is

important to practice professional decision making when it comes to the benefits of all students.
