Leaders have an important role within an organization related to its success, productivity and the performance of
the employees. The basic and fundamental task of a leader is to build and maintain a high performing team and
also possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
According to John Quiney Adams –“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and become more,
you are a leader‟‟.
As per Anthony T Dadovano-“A good leader is not the person who does things right, but the person who finds
the right things to do‟‟.
The great Victorian era historian Thomas Carlyle commented that “the history of the world are the biography of
great man‟‟.

Leaders are visionaries, they are disciplines thinkers and confidently trust their intuition.
As Warren Benis has stated “Lack of a clear vision is a mojor reason for the declining effectiveness of a leader.
Hence, a leader need to achieve tough demanding goals.

III. LEADERSHIP

According to G. H. Norman Schwarzkopf “Leadership is combination of strategy and character. If you must be
without one, be without the strategy.”
Leadership is both a process and a property. As a process leadership involve the team involvement, as property,
leadership is the set of characteristics attributed to someone who is perceived to use influence successfully.
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable other to contribute towards the
effectiveness and success of the organization, the process of influencing the activities of an organized group
towards gola achievement.
Leadership has two dimensions,
*focus on achievement of the specific group goal.
*upgrade and enhancement of goal.

IV. BASIC QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER

*HONESTY is the most important, it is nothing but sincerity, openness, truthfulness, when we say honesty:
which not only means to speak the truth, but to have the impression.
Albert Einstein said, “whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important
matters.”Out of all the qualities looked foror admired in a leader is honesty. Hence, be honest, always speak the
truth, let people know your ethics and leave a right impression.
*DELEGATE, the ability to delegate responsibility wisely and effectively is one of the reason for leader‟s
success. A leader is in charge of direction of a team or organization, a good leader is not a slave, he uses his
time in solving major issues and problems and hence this leads to success of the organization, delegating jobs
increase the morale, confidence and productivity of the employees. When the leaders gives important
responsibilities, they want to fulfil it with besy of their capacities, since they don‟t want to put the leader‟s
expectations down.
*COMMUNICATION, leaders motivate and inspire their people, this is done by clear and effective
communication i.e. good leaders are good communicators, communication means not only to speak clearly but
to be heard and understood by others, the goal should be clearly explained, the communication skills should be
inspirational and motivational. Leadership excellence can be achieved with compelling communicator.
*CONFIDENCE, a leader is very confident about the vision, and makes decisions confidently and with
conviction. A leader needs bundles of traits and personality qualities to reach excellence, learning skills can be
learned, from the institute of life, experiences, work and hard situations. Leaders exudes and emanates
empowerment, empathy, passion and vision.
*COMMITMENT, Wiston Churchill “I‟m always ready to learn, although I do not always like being
taught.”Stephen Gregg, chairman and CEO of Ethix corp “People do not follow uncommitted leaders.
Commitment can be displayed in a full range of matters to include the work hours you choose to maintain, how

545 | P a g e
you work to improve your abilities, or what you do for your fellow workers at personal sacrifice ”. The best
leaders show dedication, commitment and passion.
*POSITIVE ATTITUDE, a leader has to keep the team motivated, towards the continued success of the
company, and keeps the energy levels up. Leaders are optimistic, they also take failures as their learning
experiences, great leaders inspire other people, employees, they inspire themselves. It is very important to
maintain a positive attitude and think about the opportunities of tomorrow rather than focusing on the problems
of past. A leader with positive attitude is like an institute, he inspires, motivates, guides, and his teachings has
no limit, in such positive atmosphere success is bound to come by default, since everybody has great
inspirations, they focus on common goal, and strive hard to achieve it.
*CREATIVITY, a leader is the most creative person in the organisation. In today‟s complexity world, the
creativity is the most important leadership quality. The leader with creative mind set plan, build the business
models, they are open minded and innovative. They also inspire the subordinates to expand their creativity and
to use it with their best abilities. Creativity is not only in designing the action plan but also in making prompt
decisions, even decisions that are taken fast and good are creative ideas.
*INTUITION, is a skill, it is experience. Einsten‟s view “”The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational
mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and has forgotten the gift. I believe
in intuition and inspiration. At times I feel certain I am right while not knowing the reason”. A leader observes,
listens, and communicates, intuition springs out of reality, intuition in a leader grows with time as per his
observation on people‟s behaviour, decision made on the basis of intuition is tend to right.
*INSPIRE, effective leader inspires people in the organization to go in the right decision, leaders encourage to
see positive side of every problem, when a leader show his gratitude towards the team members, it is indeed a
great source of inspiration for the employees, and then they know in which direction to go, since their vision is
clear. Inspiring leaders know what are striving to achieve. Martin Luther King Jr said “I have a dream ” his
speech is a perfect example of this, leaders inspire through words, actions, beliefs etc, they listen carefully, they
are trustworthy, they are passionate.
*APPROACH, the leader‟s approach depends on the personality, abilities, qualities of the individual. These
characteristics reflect a range of stable individual difference, including personality, temperament, motives,
cognitive, abilities and expertise. Successful leaders is regarded as a person with difficult job and with serious
responsibilities, there are certain approach of the leader which clearly differentiates leaders from the followers.

V. ATTRIBUTES OF LEADERSHIP

Having a vision of the future, expressing ideas, supporting and commanding resources to support ideas,
developing policies and programs, core knowledge of bigger idea, vision and picture, and how to correlate
various disciplines, entities etc, skills based on strategic thinking, framing and quality improvement , team

VI. LEADERSHIP SKILLS

546 | P a g e
The willingness to take risks “to boldly go” and how to handle risk affects both professional and personal
growth. A leader should be resourceful, he should have optimistic attitude, adventurous to take risk, driven to
achieve the desired goal, adaptable to any kind of situation, should be confident in himself and in his
subordinates and should be tolerant and ambiguity.
According to Moyak Mason, the leaders must have five key skills.
*The ability to understand the people‟s ability and try to explore it for the achievement of the common goal.
*Understand relationship and problems in the present situation and not on the basis of past experiences.
*Treat everyone courteously whether the person is close or an outsider.
*Observe and trust the person who may be new in the organization.
*Holding more powers so that constant time wasted on approval and recognition from others.
LEADERSHIP STYLE is the ability to adjust to deal with and respond to the ups and downs that is an integral
part in the organizations today.
AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP, is the kind of leadership where all the decision making power are hold on with
the leaders, and employees or subordinates or members of the organization is expected to follow as per the
decision of the leader. There is very little or no inputs from the members strong leadership, leaders dictate all the
ideas and processes and group members are rarely trusted on decision or even with important task.
DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP, is the one in which sharing the decision making abilities with the other group
members. Everyone has equal opportunity to participate in the discussion, there is free flow of ideas. The
democratic leader is controlling the inputs of the members. Kendra Cherry, a psychology expert states that –
democratic leadership is the most effective and also leads to high productivity and increase the group morale.
Creativity is encouraged, every members get involved in the process, group members are encouraged to share
their ideas, opinions and experiences, yet the final say or decisions is retained by the leaders, hence the final
outcome is done considering a lot of ideas and hence the it is result oriented decision making.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADERSHIP, is a delegate leadership, leaders are members in making the decision in this
leadership there is very little guidance from the leaders, complete freedom is observed in the team, the leaders
only provide with the resources, the team members are expected to solve the problem all by themselves hence
the power is also with the members but yet the leaders are responsible for the actions of the members. In this
leadership the members are highly motivated, and high level of passionate work is observed among the members
of the team.
TASK ORIENTED OR RELATIONSHIP ORIENTED LEADERSHIP, is defined by Forsythn as „a descriptive
model of leadership which maintains that most leadership behaviour can be classified as performance
maintenance or relationship maintenance‟. In this type of leadership the leader main focus is on the task and
tries to strive for the best outcome as the result whereas in the relationship oriented leadership the leaders focus
on the well being of the members of the team. In task leadership the desired results is the priority, emphasis on
goal setting and an effective planning to achieve goals, procedure and methodology is strictly followed and the
members are punished or awarded as per their contribution in the action whereas in relationship leadership,
emphasis on communication, facilitation, casual interactions and frequent team meetings.
ETHICAL LEADERSHIP, the leaders think on the long term basis consequences, drawbacks etc. Dr Duane C
Tway call trust because it is constructed of these three components „the capacity for trusting, the perception

547 | P a g e
of competence and the perception of intentions‟. Leaders are humble, concerned for the greater good, strive for
fairness, take responsibility and show respect for each individual. An ethical leader sets ethical standards and
acts accordingly.
SERVANT LEADERSHIP, the servant leaders is servant first, brings one to aspire to lead. The leader listens,
empathize with others, he is foresighted, committed to the growth of the people, he strives in building
community, he has healing powers i.e. he tries to solve personal and professional problems, he is conceptualized
to think beyond day to day reality and also has stewardship quality. Peter Block (1993)-author of
„STEWARDSHIP AND EMPOWERED MANAGER‟ has defined stewardship as “holding something in trust
of another”.

VII. LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES

„Getting the right leadership to implement business strategies takes careful planning and dedicated effort, and
often substantial investment‟ .
According to William Pasmore „The leadership strategy should be driven by the business strategy‟. It should be
aims of becoming globalised and growth should be with innovative ideas, the success of the business depends
on customers hence it should be more customer focused , investing in high growth opportunities and work on
improving operating efficiency, also plan out assignment , coaching guiding on regular basis. It is extremely
important to build relationship in the team, regular leadership meetings and events are also very effective for
talent development over time.
