Concurrent Engineering: Expectations

09/08/2020 QM ZG663 / DE ZG663 Concurrent Engineering BITS Pilani 3

Course Description & Objectives

Title: Concurrent Engineering

Units: 5

Introduction of concurrent engineering and need, concurrent

engineering tools, advances in design and manufacturing
engineering, design for manufacture, design for assembly, rapid
prototyping, simulation, concurrent approaches to design,
manufacturing and other aspects of engineering.

• Create awareness about the philosophy, perspectives and

methodology of concurrent engineering

• Provide basic functional knowledge of product development

from a cross functional perspective to be able to manage
quality during all phases of the life-cycle

Handout: Learning Outcomes
1) to consider multiple perspectives in product development
simultaneously [Performance / Quality / Reliability / Cost /
Time / Resources / Environmental Impact]

2) categorize the quality requirements for a product at

different stages during development
3) interpret the economic feasibility of the product proposed
4) demonstrate the skills of working in cross functional
teams
5) develop new concepts and products
6) evaluate and optimise new concepts and products
7) improve product ideas to sustain in the market

Weaknesses of over the wall approach

• insufficient product specification

– leading to an excessive amount of modifications
• little attention to manufacturability issues of the
product at the design stage
• the estimated costs have usually degrees of
magnitude in error
– due mainly to the uncontrolled late design change costs
– leads to a lack of confidence in the estimated costs of
projects
• the likelihood of late changes usually leads to
– expensive changes to tooling and other equipment

• Concurrent Design
• Life-Cycle Engineering
• Integrated Product Development

Concurrent Engineering

• Not new
• Applying it in a systematic way
• Japanese auto manufacturers practiced

• In 1986, Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA)

Report R-338 coined the term “Concurrent
Engineering” a systematic method of product
and process design as well as other support
processes and services
