sheets
UNDERSTAND
Lesson 1: Estimating Sums of 3- to 4- Digit Addends
Estimating sum is when you don’t have to add or count the exact number of a given
object. It may either be larger or smaller than the exact sum. The estimated sum is very
close to the value of the exact sum.
There are clue words that an estimate is needed like “about”, “more or less”, around
and” approximately”.
During this Covid-19 pandemic, there were 352 locally stranded individuals
in Cebu City and 1 517 locally stranded individuals in Metro Manila. About
how many locally stranded individuals (LSI ) were there in the two cities?
SOLUTION:
Given Numbers Rounded Numbers
352 400
+ 1517 + 2000
1869 2400
ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Solve for the sum of the two numbers. Encircle the letter of the closest estimate.
ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Find the estimated sum of the given numbers.

⚫ Prevention is better than cure
⚫ Be healthy

General Directions: Study the following assessments carefully and write your answers on
separate sheets.
Assessment 1
Directions: Round off the number to the highest place value then give the estimated sum of
the following:
4. 8234 5. 6272
+ 655 + 3456
Assessment 2.
Directions: Estimate each sum by rounding off the numbers.
A pharmacy near the hospital was able to sell surgical masks for 5 days.
Lesson 2: Adding Mentally 2- Digit and 1- Digit Numbers Without and With
Regrouping
EXAMPLE
During the pandemic, Carlo and Ben want to help their parents financially so
they decided to sell neoprene masks online. Carlo sold 21 neoprene masks
while Ben sold 8 neoprene masks. How many neoprene masks did the two boys
sell altogether?
SOLUTION:
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Get the expanded form of the 21 + 8
addends. ( 20 + 1) + 8
STEP 2: Add the tens, and then add the 20 + (1+8)
ones. 20 + 9
STEP 3: Put together the tens and the
20 + 9 = 29
ones.
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Get the expanded form of the 47 + 9
addends. ( 40 + 7 ) + 9
7 + 9 = 16
STEP 2: Add the ones.
( Think: 16 = 10 + 6 )
( 40 + 10 ) + 6
STEP 3: Add the tens and the ones
50 + 6
ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Add mentally to get the sum.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
25 42 36 54 37
+ 4 + 7 + 3 + 6 + 8
ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Read and solve the problems mentally.
1. There are 24 red balls and 13 white balls. How many balls are there in total?
2. Anna harvested 30 ripe tomatoes and 15 unripe tomatoes. How many tomatoes
were harvested?
3. Paolo collected 29 small seashells and 28 big seashells. How many shells did
Paolo collect?
4. Divine bought 46 pony stickers and 27 Barbie stickers. How many stickers did
Divine buy altogether?
5. Zandro has 39 green marbles and 44 blue marbles. How many marbles are there
in total?
REMEMBER
Key Points
⚫ To add 2- to 1- digit numbers mentally:
⚫ For addends that require regrouping, add the ones first then the tens.
⚫ And the last step, add the tens and the ones to get the final sum.

General Directions: Study the following assessments carefully and write your answers on
separate sheets.
Assessment 1
Directions: Find the sum by adding the numbers mentally.
Addends Sum
1.) 32 6
2.) 24 18
3.) 39 23
4.) 47 45
5.) 28 56
Assessment 2
Directions: Add mentally and choose the letter of the correct answer inside the box.
A. 39 B. 96 C. 54 D. 74 E. 89
1. 2. 3.
57 18 45
+ 32 + 21 + 29
4. 5.
26 67
+ 28 + 29
Assessment 3
Directions: Solve these problems. Use mental addition.
1. There are 9 front liners at Culianan check point and 14 front liners at Divisoria
check point. How many front liners are there in the two check points station?
2. Veronica spent ₱38.00 in the morning and ₱29.00 in the afternoon. How much did
she spend in total?
3. Jerome weighs 36 kg while Pablo weighs 17 kg more than Jerome. How many
kilograms does Pablo weigh?
5. Paquito cut a ribbon into two pieces, one 24 cm long and the other 37 cm. What was the
length of the ribbon before it was cut?
To add mentally 2- to 3- digit numbers with multiples of hundreds follow these steps:
EXAMPLE
Dhalia wanted to help her community during the Covid-19 pandemic. She
will distribute relief goods to 100 families and 70 senior citizens. How
many relief goods will Dhalia distribute?
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Add the tens. 10 + 7 = 17
STEP 2: Write the ones, such that there are
zero ones. 0+0=0
STEP 3: Write the zero after the tens. 170
EXAMPLE:
Find 400 + 700.
SOLUTION:
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Add the digit in the hundreds
4 + 7 = 11
places which are 4 and 7.
STEP 2: Write the two zeros after the sum.
This means that there are 0 tens and 0 1100
ones.
STEP 3: Write them together. 11 hundreds,
0 tens and 0 ones. 1100
ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Add the numbers mentally. Choose the letter of the correct answer in column B
and write in on the space provided for.
Column A Column B
1. 90 + 300 A. 700
2. 100 + 50 B. 490
3. 400 + 90 C. 800
4. 200 + 500 D. 150
5. 700 + 100 E. 390
