UNDERSTAND
Lesson 1: Estimating Sums of 3- to 4- Digit Addends

A Understand Estimating Sum

Estimating sum is when you don’t have to add or count the exact number of a given
object. It may either be larger or smaller than the exact sum. The estimated sum is very
close to the value of the exact sum.

B Understand how to estimate sum of 3- to 4- digit addends numbers

In estimating sums of 3- to 4- digit addends, we need to arrange the addends in a

column according to their place value. Round off the addends to their greatest place value,
then add the rounded numbers.

There are clue words that an estimate is needed like “about”, “more or less”, around
and” approximately”.

5. What is the estimated surgical mask sold for 5 days? _ ___

Lesson 2: Adding Mentally 2- Digit and 1- Digit Numbers Without and With
Regrouping

A How do we add mentally 2- digit and 1- digit numbers?

In adding 2- and 1- digits mentally, we need to get the expanded form of the addends.
Add the addends in the tens place and the addends in the ones place. Then add their sums
to get the final answer.

EXAMPLE

During the pandemic, Carlo and Ben want to help their parents financially so
they decided to sell neoprene masks online. Carlo sold 21 neoprene masks
while Ben sold 8 neoprene masks. How many neoprene masks did the two boys
sell altogether?

ANALYZE THE PROBLEM:

1. Who are selling Neoprene Masks online?

2. Why did the two boys decide to sell neoprene masks online?
3. Is it important to always wear a mask during these times? Why?
4. How many neoprene masks did Carlo sell? How many did Ben sell?
5. What is asked in the problem?
6. What are given?
7. What operation will be used?
8. How can we get the answer?

SOLUTION:
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Get the expanded form of the 21 + 8
addends. ( 20 + 1) + 8
STEP 2: Add the tens, and then add the 20 + (1+8)
ones. 20 + 9
STEP 3: Put together the tens and the
20 + 9 = 29
ones.

This time, add numbers mentally with regrouping.

STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Get the expanded form of the 47 + 9
addends. ( 40 + 7 ) + 9
7 + 9 = 16
STEP 2: Add the ones.
( Think: 16 = 10 + 6 )
( 40 + 10 ) + 6
STEP 3: Add the tens and the ones
50 + 6

STEP 4: Put together the tens and ones 50 + 6 = 56

SAQ-1: How do we add numbers mentally?

SAQ-2: Determine 2 real life situations where you can utilize mental addition.

Let’s Practice! (Write your answers on separate sheets.)

ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Add mentally to get the sum.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
25 42 36 54 37
+ 4 + 7 + 3 + 6 + 8

ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Read and solve the problems mentally.

1. There are 24 red balls and 13 white balls. How many balls are there in total?

2. Anna harvested 30 ripe tomatoes and 15 unripe tomatoes. How many tomatoes
were harvested?

3. Paolo collected 29 small seashells and 28 big seashells. How many shells did
Paolo collect?

4. Divine bought 46 pony stickers and 27 Barbie stickers. How many stickers did
Divine buy altogether?

5. Zandro has 39 green marbles and 44 blue marbles. How many marbles are there
in total?
REMEMBER
Key Points
⚫ To add 2- to 1- digit numbers mentally:

⚫ First, write the numbers in expanded form.

⚫ Add the tens and then add the ones.

⚫ For addends that require regrouping, add the ones first then the tens.

⚫ And the last step, add the tens and the ones to get the final sum.

length of the ribbon before it was cut?

Lesson 3: Adding Mentally 2- to 3- Digit Numbers with Multiples of Hundreds

A What is Mental Addition?

Mental addition is a process of getting the exact answer by doing the calculation in your
head. You need to be quick in computing mentally.

To add mentally 2- to 3- digit numbers with multiples of hundreds follow these steps:

EXAMPLE

Dhalia wanted to help her community during the Covid-19 pandemic. She
will distribute relief goods to 100 families and 70 senior citizens. How
many relief goods will Dhalia distribute?

ANALYZE THE PROBLEM:

1. Who will distribute the relief goods?

2. How many relief goods will be distributed to families?
3. How many relief goods will be distributed to senior citizens?
4. Why will Dhalia distribute relief goods?
5. How would you find out the total number of relief goods that Dhalia will distribute?

HERE’S HOW TO DO IT.

Recall that 100 = 10 tens and 0 ones and 70 = 7 tens and 0 ones

STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Add the tens. 10 + 7 = 17
STEP 2: Write the ones, such that there are
zero ones. 0+0=0
STEP 3: Write the zero after the tens. 170

Therefore the answer is 170.

In adding 3- digit numbers with multiples of hundreds, follow these steps:

EXAMPLE:
Find 400 + 700.

SOLUTION:
STEPS EXAMPLE
STEP 1: Add the digit in the hundreds
4 + 7 = 11
places which are 4 and 7.
STEP 2: Write the two zeros after the sum.
This means that there are 0 tens and 0 1100
ones.
STEP 3: Write them together. 11 hundreds,
0 tens and 0 ones. 1100

Therefore, the answer is 1 100.

SAQ-1: How do we add numbers mentally?

SAQ-2: Determine two real life situations where you can utilize mental addition.

Let’s Practice! (Write your answers on separate sheets.)

ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Add the numbers mentally. Choose the letter of the correct answer in column B
and write in on the space provided for.

Column A Column B
1. 90 + 300 A. 700
2. 100 + 50 B. 490
3. 400 + 90 C. 800
4. 200 + 500 D. 150
5. 700 + 100 E. 390

ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Give the sum using mental addition.

_1. What is the sum of 200 and 40?

_2. What is 10 added to 900?

_3. The sum of 400 and 300 is _ .

_4. Find the sum of 300 and 600.

5. If 30 added to 80 is 110, what is 30 added to 90?

REMEMBER
\ Key Points

⚫ To add 2- to 3- digit numbers with multiples of hundreds mentally:

In adding without regrouping 2- to 3- digit numbers with multiples of tens and

hundreds mentally, first we add the numbers in the ones place, then the tens and lastly
the hundreds.
