Garrettcom HiVision User Guide

This document discusses enabling SNMPv3 on Garrettcom Ethernet devices for integration and management using Hirschmann HiVision network management software. It provides steps to configure SNMPv3 on Magnum 6K/10K switches and Magnum DX/5/10RX routers through their GUI or CLI. It also describes how to set up trap parameters, use HiVision's auto topology and multiconfig features to manage and configure devices. However, SNMPv3 support and management capabilities are more limited for Garrettcom devices compared to Hirschmann's native product line.

Objective
The main objective of this document is to demonstrate the capability of the Hirschmann HiVision
network management software for managing Garrettcom line of managed Ethernet devices. This
exercise will involve configuring the Garrettcom Ethernet devices so that they can be discovered and
managed by the Industrial HiVision network management application.

Scope

Hirschmann HiVision network was designed and built specifically for managing the Hirschmann line of
Ethernet devices. As Garrettcom Ethernet devices were “retrofit” in the HiVision design, the expectation
that how much the HiVision software and the Garrettcom products are compatible with each other
needs to be somewhat scaled down. While, efforts are still on to bring about more compatibility,
scalability and integration to the level on par with the Hirschmann product line, for the time being we
have to be content with the level of service provided by the HiVision software, when it comes to
Garrettcom line of products.

Configuration required on the HiVision Server.

On the HiVision side of the implementation, the user has to make sure that SNMPv3 username and
password are defined in Industrial Hivision. Industrial Hivision will authenticate itself by using these
credentials, to establish a “trust” relationship between itself and the queried device. To define the
SNMPv3 username and password, click on “Preferences” button on the HiVision window (top-right) and
got to Advanced>Device Credentials and under the “SNMP Guess List”, click on “New” and then put in
the SNMPv3 username (admin) and password (garrettcom). That is should set HiVision to go and
connect and query devices.

Using Auto Topology To Create A Map Of Managed Devices Via HiVision

The auto topology utility helps the user to see how the various Ethernet devices on their network are
connected to each other with full module/port information and creates a diagrammatic representation
of the actual network. Auto topology option is supported on 6K/10K, DX, 5/10RX devices. When run for
the first time, the Hirschmann HiVision will automatically detect devices and create a topology of the
network based on the information gleaned from devices it queries. To create a topological map of the
devices, simply right click on the folder that contains the devices and then click on Auto-topology.

For Garrettcom devices, the above options will be have to be chosen for faster topology calculation. If a
new device has been added to the topology and the user wishes to create an updated topology, they
just need to choose the option “Update Topology” under Strategy, as shown in the next screen shot.
