The Nobel Prize
Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a Swedish inventor and philanthropist, bequeathed most of his fortune to a trust that
he designated as a fund from which annual prizes could be awarded to the individuals and organizations that
they achieved through invention or discovery which would have the greatest benefit to humanity in a
particular year.
5 According to the legend, Nobel’s death had been erroneously reported in a newspaper, and the focus of the
obituary was the fact that Nobel had invented dynamite. When he read this objective summary of his life,
Nobel decided that he wanted his name to be remembered for something more positive and humanitarian than
inventing an explosive which was a potential weapon. He rewrote his will in 1895, to establish the Nobel
Foundation that are named after him with the original amount of nine million dollars. It was written in the
10 Nobel’s will that The Nobel Foundation is the legal owner and the administering agent of the funds and
instituting the prizes.
Five years after Nobel’s death, the first five prizes, worth about forty thousand dollars, were tobe awarded.
There were five classifications for outstanding contributions written in Nobel’s will included chemistry, physics,
physiology or medicine, literature and international peace. These prizes have been administered continually by
15 the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm since they were first awarded in 1901. In 1969, the Central Bank of
Sweden suggested to add a sixth prize in the field of economics.
Candidates for the prizes must be nominated in writing by February 1 of each year by a qualified and
recognized authority in each of the fields of competition. The nominated candidates will be chosen by the Royal
Swedish Academy and The Norwegian Nobel Committee. The former will select recipients in physics,
20 medicine, chemistry, and economics, whereas the latter has to select recipient in peace.
With the King of Sweden officiating, the prizes are usually presented in Stockholm on December 10. It is the
anniversary of Nobel’s death. The value, fame and prestige of the Nobel Prizes have continued to grow.
Today, the prize includes a medal, a diploma, and a cash award of about one million dollars.

The Balance of Nature
In a natural community, all the different plants and animals are in state of balance which is achieved
by the plants and animals that are interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings.
An example of a natural community is a wood-land. This is dominated by a particular species of plant,
such as the oak tree in an oak wood. In this example, the oak tree is called the dominant species. There
5 are also many other types of plants, from brambles, bushes, and small trees to mosses, lichens and
algae. The latter are growing on tree-trunks and rocks.
The plants of a natural community are the producers. They use carbon dioxide, oxygen, water and
nitrogen to build up their tissues using energy of sunlight. The plant tissues form food for the plant-
eating animals that are called herbivores. Then, they are eaten by the flesh-eating animals that are
10 called carnivores. Thus, plants produce the basic food supply for all the animals of a community.
Therefore, the animals are the consumers. They are either herbivores or carnivores. Examples
of the former in a woodland community are rabbits, deer, mice, snails, and insects such as aphids
and caterpillars. They are sometimes eaten by the carnivores. While the latter are of all sizes, from
insects such as beetles and lacewings to animals such as owls, shrews, foxes, and lions.
15 Some carnivores feed on herbivores, some feed on the smaller carnivores, while some feed on
both. So, an owl will eat beetles, shrews, voles, and mice as well.
This food relationship between the different members of the community are known as food webs.
All food chains start with plants. The chains are formed by the herbivores that eat the plants and the
carnivores that feed on the herbivores. There are more organism at the base of a food chain than at the
20 top. For example, there are many more green plants than carnivores in a community..
Another important part of the community is made up of the decomposers which consist of
bacteria and fungi. They live in the soil, feed on dead animals and plants. By doing this, they break
down the tissues of the dead organism, release mineral, and salts into the soil.

VI. Archimedes’ Principle

Archimedes (287-212 BC) who was a great Greek mathematician was asked to solve a problem that was
suggested by King Hieron II. The King who was surprised at his crown when he put it on his head, lost his
trust to the goldsmith who made the crown. He was suspicious that the crown was not consisted of pure gold.
Archimedes who was very confused of the King’s command tried very hard to find out the solution.
5 At first, he did not know what to do, therefore he left the crown and doing nothing for some weeks. One day,
Archimedes who took a bath and got into his bathtub noticed that water was displaced, or pushed out over the
bathtub. Observing the result of this water, he got out nakedly of the bathtub, exclaimed happily and announced,
“Eureka!” “Eureka!” which means “I’ve got it! “I’ve got it! He did several experiments to support his
invention.
Finally he came to a conclusion that any object which is immersed in a liquid is buoyed up by a force that is
10 equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. This is known as Archimedes’ principle.
According to this principle, if a rock which weighs 100 pounds and has a volume of a cubic foot is
submerged in water, displaces 1 cubic foot of water which weighs 62 pounds. So, The gravitational pull on the
rock is 100 pounds downward and the buoyant force is 62 pounds upward. Out of water, people would need
to exert a force of 100 pounds to lift a rock. In the water people would have to exert a force of 100 pounds
minus
15 62 pounds (or 38 pounds).
The buoyant force of a liquid, or how much it pushes upward, depends on the density of the liquid. A body
will float if its density is less than that of the liquid in which it is immersed; it will sink if its density is greater.
Ice is less dense than water. Therefore, according to Archimedes principle, icebergs whose densities are less
than that of sea water, will float on the surface of the ocean. The density of steel ships which are designed with
20 many spaces filled with air is less than that of water.
Density is computed by dividing the weight of the liquid by its volume. Saltwater has a density of 64
pounds
per cubic foot. Fresh water has a density of 62 pounds per cubic foot. The buoyant force of saltwater is
greater
than that of fresh water. This explains why it is easier for a swimmer to float in the ocean than in the lake.
By implementing this invention, Archimedes who has found that the crown consisted of false gold, finally
25 solved the King’s problem. By this conclusion, then the King furiously punished the goldsmith.
