Introduction
Activated Analysis is the latest innovation from AspenTech to streamline the process engineering workflow. It allows users
to access the functionality of complimentary energy and economic analysis software, without leaving the Aspen HYSYS or
Aspen Plus user environments. This guide will give users a jump start on learning to use Activated Analysis in Aspen
HYSYS V8.0 If you are an Aspen Plus user, please see the analogous guide for Aspen Plus.
This is not meant to be used as a stand-alone reference document. We recommend that a range of other resources be
called upon to give the new user a comprehensive view of how to use Activated Analysis. These include:

This document covers Activated Analysis in Aspen HYSYS. This guide assumes that the user has Aspen HYSYS V8.0 or
higher installed on their computer.
The Activated Workflow

Activation is a new concept created by AspenTech to streamline the engineering workflow across industries. With
activation, it is possible to run complimentary process design programs in the background while building a model with
Aspen HYSYS or Aspen Plus. Activation runs concurrently with the user simulation, updating whenever the model is
changed. This allows the user to immediately view the impact of design changes for faster and more efficient process
modeling.
Aspen HYSYS V8.0 and Aspen Plus V8.0 feature two different types of activation: Activated Energy Analysis and
Activated Economic Analysis. Activated Energy Analysis helps users analyze improvements to maximize energy saving
with minimum capital expenditure. Activated Economic Analysis gives process engineers insight into the capital and
operating costs associated with their models throughout the design process, keeping them on track with the most
economically feasible designs before they send the plans to the estimating department.
By using activation during design, process engineers gain the advantage of pre-screening their own models before sending
them off to other departments for thorough analysis. This way, they minimize time lost by building simulations that rely on
equipment that consumes too much energy or is too expensive. Ultimately, the workflow of iterating through models
based on feedback from other departments becomes streamlined, allowing everyone on the team (from process engineers
to equipment and estimating specialists) to spend more time working on higher quality design cases.
The sections below highlight how to use the key features of Activated Energy and Economic Analysis.

Activated Energy Analysis

Activated Energy Analysis calls upon Aspen Energy Analyzer to manage energy consumption and greenhouse gas
production in a model.
Setting Up Utilities
In order to use Activated Analysis to estimate utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to properly set
up utilities. Aspen HYSYS V8.0 automatically assigns default cost and emission specifications to common utilities. To
check that these align with your design needs, open the Process Utilities Manager by clicking the Process Utility Manager
button in the Simulation group of the Home tab in the ribbon (Figure 1).

Scroll through the process utilities matrix to view the properties and cost indices assigned to each utility. Any value in blue
can be redefined by user input (Figure 2).

The default Emissions Data Source is US-EPA Rule E9-5711. To change CO2 tracking parameters for all utilities in the
process, click the Green House Gas Emissions Preference button (Figure 3) to open the Green House Gas Emissions
window.

Here you can change the CO2 Emission Factor Data Source, the Ultimate Fuel Source, the CO2 Emission Factor, and the
CO2 Energy Source Efficiency Factor for all of the utilities.
To adjust the tax on carbon emissions, click “Carbon Fee Preference” (Figure 4).

This will open the Simulation Options window (also accessible by clicking File, Options). In the General Options section,
you can input a new value for “Carbon Fee/Carbon Tax” (Figure 5).

Accessing Activated Energy

The tiles governing activation are displayed in their own panel. To open it, click the Activated Analysis button in the
Analysis group on the Home tab (Figure 6).

The Activation Panel has two tiles, one for energy and one for economics (Figure 7). Hover over the tiles to identify the
one you want.

You can undock the Activation Panel or move it to another part of the Aspen HYSYS environment by right clicking on it
and selecting one of the options that appears (Figure 8).

When you click on the Activated Energy tile, a dashboard appears with important information about the energy use in
your model. Figure 9 shows a typical view of the Activated Energy dashboard which displays current energy and carbon
expenses and potential savings.

The stacked buttons on the left allow you to access three different aspects of Activated Energy Analysis: Energy and
Greenhouse Gases Emission view, Energy Analysis Options, and the Saving Potentials Form (Figure 10).

Tracking Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Costs

The primary view of Activated Energy Analysis is the energy and carbon emission cost view. It displays the current energy
and carbon emissions costs (using your utilities specifications), theoretical minimum energy and carbon emission costs,
and relative cost saving potentials (Figure 11). To stay aware of these important performance indicators, check the
Activated Analysis throughout the design process to help guide better decision making.

Clicking on the first stacked button on the left of the Activated Energy panel displays the actual heating and cooling usage
and carbon emissions in your process, along with the corresponding theoretical minimum values calculated by Aspen
Energy Analyzer (Figure 12).

The section below on suggested heat exchanger network (HEN) improvements explains how to use Activated Energy
Analysis to reduce this energy expenditure in your design.
Considering Suggested HEN Improvements

Activated Energy Analysis suggests up to eleven design changes to improve heat exchanger networks within a simulation.
These include modifying, adding, removing, and relocating heat exchangers to minimize energy consumption. To see a
summary of the most promising suggestions, click the launcher at the bottom of the Activated Energy dashboard and then
click “Generate.” To see a more detailed summary of any of the generated options, double click on it (Figure 13).

This will bring you to a Scenario form in the Energy Analysis Environment within Aspen HYSYS. You can access the
detailed forms for any other scenarios using the Navigation Pane. In each scenario form, the top section offers a summary
of energy use, emissions and costs associated with the current design, the suggested change, and the target (Figure 14).

The lower section of the form contains heat exchanger details. Here, you can enter process constraints (such as limits on
heat exchanger area or temperature approach) to refine solutions from theoretical to practical. Once you have made a
change to the heat exchanger details, click “Update” to modify the scenario (Figure 15).

The Energy Analysis Environment ribbon is designed so that the typical user workflow follows the button pattern from left
to right. To get an overview of saving potentials for the process, click the Saving Potentials button or select the appropriate
form from the Navigation Pane (Figure 16).

Next, you can review the proposed scenarios, or add your own using the Add Scenario button. Finally, you can compare all
of these by clicking the Compare Scenarios button (Figure 17).

When you are done with your energy analysis, don’t forget to return to the Simulation Environment to continue your
process design (Figure 18).

Activated Economic Analysis

Activated Economic Analysis calls upon Aspen Process Economic Analyzer to generate relative capital and utility cost
estimates throughout the design process.
Setting Up Costing Options

In order to use Activated Economic Analysis to estimate relative capital and utility costs, it is important to properly set up
costing options. First, open the Costing Options form, by clicking the Cost Options button in the Prepare group on the
Economics tab (Figure 19).

The default template for “Process Economic Analyzer Options” is US_IP (United States, Inch-Pound basis). To select a
different template, click “Browse.” Next, specify a name to identify the scenario. You also have the option of adding a
description and making detailed specifications, such as operating life of the plant (Figure 20).

To improve the accuracy of relative utility cost estimation, you should also set up energy costs for utilities (see Setting Up
Utilities, pg 3).

Mapping Unit Operations and Sizing and Evaluating Equipment

The Integrated Economics group on the Economics tab, like the Energy Analysis ribbon, is designed so that the typical user
workflow follows the button pattern from left to right. It starts with mapping, which establishes the relationship between
unit operations and the equipment they represent. This relationship is not always one-to-one; rather, many unit operations
actually model several pieces of equipment. For example, a distillation column block actually represents a column,
condenser, reflux drum, reboiler, etc. In order to improve relative costing accuracy, it is important to map unit operations to
the correct equipment models.
To map unit operations to equipment, first be sure that the Economics Active box in the Economics Solver group is
checked. This will enable the economics software which works under the hood to power Activated Economic Analysis.
Next, click the Map button in the Integrated Economics group (Figure 21).

For your initial mapping, use the default mapping option. When the mapping equipment form launches, review and change
the default mapping as necessary to appropriately represent your process. When you are done, click “OK” (Figure 22).

Once the equipment is mapped, it must be sized. To do this, click the Size button in the Integrated Economics group.
When sizing is complete, click the View Equipment button to open the Results Summary – Equipment form. Here, in
addition to reviewing the sizing of the equipment, it is important to select the correct metallurgies prior to estimating
costs. By default, all equipment will be priced using Carbon Steel as the metallurgy. This, like all mutable user inputs,
appears in blue (Figure 23).

Finally, you must evaluate to determine the relative costs for each piece of equipment and the operating costs. To do so,
click the Evaluate button in the Integrated Economics Group.
Accessing Activated Economics

Click on the Activated Economics tile (Figure 7) to open the dashboard summarizing the estimated relative capital and
utility costs for the current simulation (Figure 24).

Delving into Activated Economic Analysis

To learn more about the estimates presented on the dashboard, click on the launchers at the bottom of the fields. The
launcher at the lower right of the Capital Cost field will bring you back to the Results Summary – Equipment form.
The launcher at the lower right of the Utility Cost field (Figure 25) will bring you to the Utilities tab.

Toggle through the tabs on this form to see a summary of information relating to each type of equipment represented in
the simulation. It is very important to review the error fields to ensure a successful estimate (Figure 26).

To generate a report, click on the Investment Analysis button in the Economics tab in the ribbon (Figure 27). Once you are
satisfied with your results, the information can be handed over to a costing specialist, who can use Aspen Capital Cost
Estimator for a more detailed analysis.
