WEEK 2: PRESENT TENSE

1.0 PRESENT TENSE

For tenses, there are three different time lines. Present tense is basically actions
that are happening now, at the current time. It can be divided into three different
types:
1.1 Simple Present
1.2 Present Continuous
1.3 Present Perfect

1.1 Simple Present

verb+(s)
-if the subject is singular

The simple present is a verb tense with two main uses. We use the simple present
tense when an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly
For e.g.: Zack has his own car now.

Simple Present can be formed by using base word of verb. For singular subject, the
verb should be added with ‘s’ or ‘-es’.
For e.g.: Julia and Jazz go to school by bus.
Julia goes to school by bus.
For questions, we can use ‘does’ for singular subject and ‘do’ for plural subject.
For e.g.: Does Julia go to school by bus?
Do Julia and Jazz go to school by bus?

1.2 Present Continuous

Present continuous is a verb tense that is used to indicate actions that are
happening now, frequently or might continue in the future.

The present perfect tense refers to an action or state that either occurred at an
indefinite time in the past or began in the past and continued to the present time.

WEEK 3: ADJECTIVES

1.0 ADJECTIVES

Adjectives are words used to describe quality or state of nouns. They can be used
by adding words before a noun or at the end of the sentence by referring to the
noun.

For e.g.: The spicy chicken is my favourite dish in the restaurant.

The beautiful scenery is captured by his camera.

The child is angry because he did not get his candy.

Adjectives can be divided into three parts:

1.1 Positive

1.2 Comparative

1.3 Superlative

1.1 Positive adjectives

They are words that can be used to describe a quality or state such as number,
opinion, size, shape, age, colour, origin, material and purpose.

For e.g.: The big building belongs to my father.

1.2 Comparative adjectives

This can be used to compare nouns that act as subjects in sentences. Comparative
adjectives can be formed by adding suffix ‘–er’ followed by ‘than’ to most of the
adjectives. Some adjectives even change in spelling when they are used in
comparative form. For adjectives that cannot be changed, the word ‘more’ is used
before the adjective to form comparative adjective.

For e.g.: Johnny is taller than Amin. (tall)

His handwriting is better than her handwriting. (good)

The chocolate cake is more delicious than the red velvet cake. (delicious)

1.3 Superlative adjectives

Superlative adjectives indicate that something has the highest degree of the quality
or state. This adjective is formed by adding the article ‘the’ before the adjective
and suffixes such as ‘-est’, ‘-iest’ to the adjectives. For words that cannot be
changed, the word ‘most’ is added after the article ‘the’.

For e.g.: The KLCC used to be the tallest building in the world. (tall)

Harith Iskandar is the funniest man I have ever met. (funny)
