METHOD STATEMENT – COFFERDAM USING SSP & WALLER

1. Introduction
A cofferdam is a temporary structure designed to keep water and/or soil out of the excavation in
which a bridge pier or other structure is built. When construction must take place below the water
level, a cofferdam is built to give workers a dry work environment. Sheet piling is driven around
the work site, seal concrete is placed into the bottom to prevent water from seeping in from
underneath the sheet piling, and the water is pumped out.

This document will explain the method statement for preparing the area before commencing the
piling work, due to the pile cap positions are below the water level and below the riverbed.
Cofferdam will be installed using Sheet Pile, to prevents water and soil to come inside the
excavation and piling area. Sheet pile is used considering the narrow work area and to lessen the
embankment used when compared to sloping using jumbo bag/ton-pack.

All the information in this method statement are reference only. Actual method statement for
implementation will be submitted for approval before implementation.

2. Scope of works
The scope of works is as follow:

- Heavy equipment mobilization/demobilization.

- Sheet pile material procurement & mobilization.
- Sheet pile installation.
- Excavation.

3. Materials
Material that will be used are as follow:

- Steel sheet pile

- Waller frame

4. Construction Equipment
Equipment that will be used are as follow:

- Long arm excavator (1)

- Dump truck (4)
- Flat bed truck (1)
- Crawler crane (1)
- Vibro-hammer (1)
- Survey equipment
- Hand tools

5. Manpower
Allocated manpower shall be as follow:

- Supervisor (1)
- Safety officer (1)
- Operator (2)
- Driver (5)
- Rigger (1)
- Surveyor (1)
- Ast. Survey (1)
- Worker (8)

6. Method of Work
6.1. Preparation
Before commencing the work, contractor to make sure to check all the tools and heavy
equipment that will be used every day before commencing the work., and to make sure the
material that will be used is checked thoroughly in the factory before transported to site, and
at site before installed.

6.2. Installation Area

The cofferdam will be installed on the pier area (pier 1 & pier 2) to construct pilings, pile
caps, and pier column (at least until pier column casted height is above the working platform.

Installation
Area

Given the relatively shallow water depth, and the pile caps depth below the river banks (±
2m below) the excavation depth needed is approximately 9.5 m depth for the left bank, and
7.5 m depth for the right bank.

6.3. Sheet pile installation

1) Position of Sheet Pile

Method Statement

PALU IV BRIDGE, CENTRAL SULAWESI, INDONESIA

Guide frame/guide beam is placed on the ground to set out the position of the sheet pile
wall, surveyor to check the coordinate to make sure that the position is correct.

2) Installation of the first Sheet Pile

Method Statement

The piling rig/vibro-hammer lift up the first sheet pile and drives it into the ground,
leaving about 1-0,5 meters length above the ground level. Surveyor to check the
verticality of the sheet pile before and while driving.

3) Installation of second Sheet Pile

Method Statement

The piling rig drives the second sheet pile into the ground, and the second sheet pile
interlocks with the first sheet pile. Supervisor to make sure the interlock between sheet
pile is installed correctly.

4) Repetition of process

Continue to install the sheet pile (repeats process 2 and process 3) until installation of
sheet pile is completed within the length of guide frame.

5) Extension of Sheet Pile

Method Statement

If the first sheet pile installed are not long enough to reach the required depth in the
ground, extension sheet pile is required. This is done by welding the ends of second
sheet pile length to the one driven in earlier and driving the combined length into the
ground.
Continue the sheet pile installation until the pile cap area is closed, then continue to carry
out the excavation work.

6.4. Excavation Works

Excavation work will be done after piling work is done. Excavation work using excavator
with long arm attachment with approximate maximum reach is 15 m, as can be seen on
image below.

Based on work range table attached on figure above, can be known that the maximum reach
of the long arm excavator is 15.2 m horizontal reach, and 15.8 m of vertical reach (digging
depth).

To excavate for pile cap area, a narrow type of bucket is needed to reach the space in
between concrete pile.

Transport and dump the excavated material to the temporary stockyard area (material will be
used to re-backfill the pier pile cap).

Continue excavation until required depth and continue to prepare for the next works (Pile
Cap Work)

7. Health, Safety, & Environmental

General health and safety rules and regulations:

1) Ensure that all safety precautions and recommendations outlined in the Risk Assessments
have been applied.

2) Make sure that:

 All personnel including Third Parties are safety inducted prior to site entry.

 Workers are trained and competent in their duties.

 Operators are qualified, hold license for machine operation and trained in the
maintenance of machinery.

 All tools and equipment are in safe and good conditions.

3) Provide First Aid Facility on working Site in case of minor injury treatment.

4) Arrange for all personnel the pertinent Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety
helmet, safety boots (Boots up to the knees are required when clearing shrubs and trees, to
avoid snake bites), ear / eye protectors, dust mask, gloves and reflective vest (When working
in vicinity of the road or nearby the excavator or other heavy machines).

5) Place warning signs, barricades, lightings or fences at relevant locations such as:

 Critical excavations.

 Access roads where traffic flow is disturbed by the work – use signalmen wearing high
visibility clothes to arrange traffic.

6) Investigate fall prevention method to identify the presence of any abandoned wells or
drainage systems to prevent personals from falling in it.

7) Ensure safe access to the Site Area and maintain the permanent and temporary access roads in
a good condition during construction activities.

8) Ensure on-site earth moving operation such as site levelling, excavation, cut and fill, pile
boring, etc. to have proper maintenance and proper disposal location to avoid damage to
surrounding environment.

9) Ensure vehicle movement route, in and out, and along the project area.

10) Ensure dump truck carrying excavated soil (in and out project site and along route to disposal
area) is properly checked to avoid accidental load spillage.
