COURSE OUTLINE
1. Course Title: Academic Writing

2. Course Code: will be made by Training Management & Student Affairs Department
3. Units of Credit: 03 (Theory: 1.5; Practice: 1.5)

4. Entry Level: 3rd year student
5. Time Allocation:
+ Theory: 22.5 periods
+ Practice: 22.5 periods
+ Independent study and research: The minimum time for self-study is 90 hours.
6. Prerequisite: - Students are required to have completed Writing 1-5. - English
competency required is C1 (CEFR)
7. Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will achieve:
7.1 Knowledge: Students will be able to:
 understand the structure and style of academic writing, how to write the introductory
paragraph, how to write the paragraphs in coherence in the body and how to write the
conclusion in unity.
 develop more academic words in various fields.

 accumulate terminologies to write the texts relating to trends in the charts, and
graphs.
 identify the requirements to meet in view to an academic essay.
 know how to present a process to make a research and how to write an essay in
English at the level for college writing of an undergraduate student.
7.2 Skills: Students will be able to:

 use the right and concise word choice, word forms in accordance to collocations.
 apply the structures of diversified sentences such as simple sentences, compound
sentences, complex sentence and special structures of English language.
 make the outine of an academic essay.
 write a correct paragraph including topic sentences and supporting sentences; at the
same time know how to connect and transfer to make a well-done essay.
 summarize, paraphrase as well as extract information from references such as
quotations, citation & referencing.
7.3 Attitude: Students should:

 be aware of enhancing academic vocabulary in view to advanced level and pay
attention to word forms, collocations to use the words effectively.
 be aware of self-taught and independent study beyond class time.
 be aware of having further reading to have better ideas for their essays.
 be aware of being self-improved and enhancing their morality as researchers: not to
copy or plagiarize without having clear extraction or origin.
At the end of the course, students are expected to achieve writing skills at level BEC
Higher or IELTS 7.0
8. Course Description:
The course content involves two parts: Class meeting and Independent study.

Class meeting: Lecturers will provide students with theories and principles being applied
for academic essays. Students write essays partially in view to lecturers’ instructions.
Independent study
 Vocabulary List: Students are encouraged to read academic themes to increase

their capital of vocabulary and pay attention to the use of suitable and concise
words.
 Grammar: Students are also encouraged to improve and practice writing useful
academic structures in view to formal English and practice diversified structures _
simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences _ as well as certain
special English structures.
9. Performance Requirements: Students are required to attend class regularly in view to

the current School regulations.
 Attendance: Students are required to attend all class meetings in accordance with
the syllabus and participate in all class activities upon Lecturers’ requests and
instructions.
 Exercises: Students are also required to complete homework and class work
assigned by Lecturers. (Lecturers will personally check)
 Students are required to actively make an independent study under the Lecturers’
instructions to overcome shortcomings of each individual.
 Students are required to have reference documents on theory and practice
assigned by Lecturers together with notebooks and exercise books.
 Moreover, each student must own a good dictionary and a grammar book or
grammar document for independent study.

Class Attendance and Class Participation: 20%

Teaching method: Lecturers will follow Task-based teaching/learning. Students will have
individual work or group work according to the respective lesson and upon Lecturers’
