A very good morning to madam Carlmila and my fellow beloved friends. On this
beautiful day I am going to present on 21st Century Learning. In the era of globalisation our
world is changing rapidly day by day and the same goes for learning, it is changing and
revolving. In 21st Century learning there are few skills that is crucial for learning. The 21st
Century skills are categorize into two parts which is the Learning Skills (The Four C’s) and
the Literacy Skills (IMT).
First and foremost, the learning skills or known as the four C’s. Learning skills teach
students the essential mental processes that are needed in 21 st Century learning. Critical
thinking is one of the most crucial skill for students. Critical thinking is a mechanism that will
help student to think and learn without the help of teacher. In a research conducted for the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, University of Oregon, professor David T. Conley finds
that “habits of mind” such as “analysis, interpretation, precision and accuracy, problem
solving, and reasoning” can be as or more important than content knowledge in determining
success in college courses. Next, creativity that is define as the ability to think out of the box.
Creativity will empowers students to see concepts from different perspective and this will
lead to innovation by the students. On the other hand, collaboration is define as getting
students to work together to solve a problem. Few brains are better than a brain.
Collaboration mean that all student would be willing to give their ideas and help each other
to reach a goal. Moreover, communication skill is the one that bring all these learning skill
together. It is important for student to learn to communicate effectively to convey ideas
successfully between students. A good communication between students will help in the
education process. A student can communicate and help each other in the learning process
and hence for a better learning experiences.
Moving on with Literacy Skill or also known as IMT. Literacy Skills consist of three
branches which is information literacy, media literacy, and technology literacy. Information
literacy is the foundation in literacy skills. Information literacy helps student to understand
information and fact that they will encounter online. The most important part of it is that it
teaches how to separate fact from opinion in this information age. It is essential for students
today in learning, so that students will not fall into false information and harm their learning.
The second skill is media literacy. Media literacy is the practice of identifying publishing
methods, outlets, and sources while distinguishing between the ones that are the credible
and the one that are not. Similar to information literacy, media literacy is helpful for finding
truth in this information saturated world. That is how this media literacy will help students
fund a reliable and trustworthy sources of information in their life as a student in the 21 st
Century. The third and last skill in literacy skill is technology literacy, it teach the students the
machine and technology involved in the Information Age. Technology literacy gives student
the information of the technology and how it works. As a result, students can adapt to the
world more effectively becomes more knowledgeable.
The Teachers also need to play their role in teaching and integrating technology in
st
21 Century Teaching and Learning. Teacher need to nurture the Four C’s and the Literacy
Skills in their students to go with the flow of the world. Teachers also need to integrate
technology in the teaching and learning. As an example, teachers integrate technology such
as Virtual Reality in 21st Century learning to take the students to experience the lesson itself.
With Virtual Reality (VR) tools, students can travel to the Pyramids in Egypt, see the Great
Wall of China, and experience first-hand the vastness of the Sahara Desert. By experiencing
themselves, students will remember and understand the lesson better. Thus, it show that the
use of technology in education really is convenient and effective in the process of teaching
and learning. The in-experience involvement of the student will have life-long impact on the
students as a learners.
In a nutshell, 21st Century learning mainly emphasize on the 21 st Century skills and
the integration of technology in today’s education. With that I end my presentation, thank you
for lending me your ears.
