1
Dear students,

Welcome to the world of Carpentry!!!

This Self Learning kit is an innovative tool to meet the standards of the
K-12 curriculum in providing the teachers and learners relevant and localized
content. It focuses on the different activities that will assess your level in
terms of skills and knowledge that you are expected to demonstrate after
going through this learning material.
As always, read all the instructions and necessary information so that
you can follow the given activities and answer it correctly.

Code: TLE_IACP7/8ID-0g-h-3
MELC: APPLY FREEHAND SKETCHING
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. Define freehand sketching.
2. Appreciate the freehand drawing
3. Perform freehand sketching exercises
4. Draw simple carpentry plans based on a given tasks

Class our lesson focuses on apply freehand sketching. You
have to learn the different steps in sketching an isometric box.
This skill helps you in making a project plan out of a working
drawing. You can easily do your work if you have the skills in
freehand sketching.

TERMS TO REMEMBER

Dimension-definite measure shown on a drawing in detail.

Isometric drawing-drawing which resembles a respective drawing

Orthographic Projection-arrangement in a drawing of the three principal views of

object

Perspective Drawing-the representation of an object on a plan surface, pertaining to

Materials, styles and finish presented as to have the same appearance as when
seen
from a particular viewpoint.

Sketch-freehand drawing of an object

Freehand Sketching

The creation of images that serve as graphic representations or models is

called sketching. Freehand sketching is the manual sketching done with the
minimum help of sketching tools. Freehand sketching tools include wooden pencil,
eraser and pencil sharpener. Wooden pencil comes in 3 grades of hardness namely
hard, medium and soft. Eraser is a tool that erases unnecessary lines and letters or
those that are product of errors. Pencil sharpener keeps the pencil point sharp and
conical.

Sketching Graphic elements and shapes

Freehand sketching is a useful skill that can be perfected by means of

practicing simple guide lines. This oftentimes starts by creating simple lines and
figures.
1. Sketching lines-start sketching by placing paper on table surface. Make a
start
and end point. Add more points to the previously drawn point with a approximate
distance of 1”-11/2” from each other. Make the line darker to complete your sketch.
2. Sketching Arcs- in sketching arcs, start sketching vertical and horizontal
guidelines intercepting at the origin. Draw an inclined dash between the inclined line

4
and origin. Sketch the arc through 3 points by using light strokes. Make the arc
darker.
3. Sketching Circles-start making a square for a circle. The size of the
square would be the diameter of the circle. Draw the centerlines on the square.
Make four diagonals on the new four squares before crating two points between
diagonals and outer square corners. Sketch the circle using light strokes. Darken
the circle thereafter.

STEPS IN SKETCHING AN ISOMETRIC BOX

1. Draw a vertical axis

2. Draw left and right axis

3. Determine the width and length of the box and then draw a vertical line

5
4. Draw a left and right axis to the determined height of the box

5. Project a line parallel to the left and right axis

6. Label the box to determine the top, front and the right-side view

STEPS IN SKETCHING ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING

6
1.Study the object to be drawn (See Isometric Drawing)
2. Draw the top view, front view and the right side view

3. Draw a simple drawing using block as model. Try to study the given view

STEPS IN SKETCHING ISOMETRIC DRAWING OF A GIVEN

ORTHOGRAPHIC FIGURE
1. Study the object to be drawn (See orthographic drawing)
2. Draw the isometric drawing
3. Layout the front view
4. Sketch the top view and side view
5. Finalize the object to complete the drawing.

7
The examples given below are your guide in drawing
freehand sketching in isometric and orthographic drawing.
This example helps you in making your working drawing.

Example:

8
Accomplish this activity is very essential for you to determine
whether you understand the lesson.
Let’s do this.

A. In clean short coupon bond sketch the following using the following dimension:
One coupon bond for each item
Dimension: Height= 6 cm Width=6 cm Length=6 cm
Criteria for Assessment: Analytic Scoring Rubrics
Criteria 5 points 3 points 1 point
Accuracy All lines are drawn There are 1 to 3 Majority of the lines
approximately lines are inappropriately
according to its inappropriately drawn
characteristics drawn according to
its characteristics
Neatness Finished output Pleasing but Finished output
was neatly done, erasures and have so many
pleasing and no smudges are erasures and
erasures. observable on the smudges
finished output
1. Sketch and Isometric Box
2. Do the Orthographic Drawing of the given Isometric Figure

3. Draw the Isometric of the given 3 main views

B Cross Word Puzzle: Write the word which is being asked in the Cross and Down in

9
In the puzzle.

10
Orthographic drawings are typically two-dimensional views of
an object. For instance, if you were designing a table, you
would draw a top view, side view, and front view. An isometric
drawing is meant to depict a 3D image of an object in what
appears to be a perspective view. However, all lines in an
isometric drawing can be measured to their height, length,
and width.

Which of the two (isometric and orthographic) you must prefer

to do easily and why?

Write your answers on the box:

11
A. Identification: Write the word or group of words which make the statement
correct.
_____1. It is the three-dimensional representation of an object in two-dimensional
surface.
_____2. It is defined as the two-dimensional representation of an object which can
only show one side at a time.
_____3. The creation of images that serve as graphic representations or models.
_____4. It is a freehand drawing of an object.
_____5. The representation of an object on a plan surface, pertaining to materials,
styles, and finish presented as to have the same appearances as when seen from a
particular viewpoint.
_____6. It is drawn around three axes from a horizontal line with a vertical axis, 30
degrees angle to the right and another 30 degrees to the left.
_____7. It starts sketching by placing a paper on a table surface.
_____8. It starts sketching vertical and horizontal guidelines intercepting at the
origin.
____ 9. The arrangement in a drawing of the 3 principal views of an object.
____10. A drawing which resembles a respective drawing.

B. Sequencing: Arrange chronologically the steps in constructing isometric box and

the steps in sketching Isometric drawing of a given Orthographic figure by placing
number 1 for the first step, 2 for the second step up to the last step.
For 1-6 the construction of Isometric Box
_____1. Draw left and right axis
_____2. Draw a left and right axis to determine the height of the box.
_____3. Label the box to determine the top, front and right-side view.
_____4. Draw a vertical line
_____5. Determine the width and length of the box and then draw a vertical line.
_____6. Project a line parallel to the left and right axis.

For 7-12-Steps in sketching Isometric drawing of a given orthographic figure

_____7. Sketch the top view and side view
_____8. Draw the Isometric drawing
_____9. Lay out the front view
____10. Study the object to be drawn
____11. Finalize the object to complete the drawing
