1. Identify several Filipino Scientist and research their contributions in the field of
science.

A. Angel C. Alcala- He was born on March 1, 1929 he was named as a National


Scientist of the Philippines in the year of 2014 because of his research about the
Philippine amphibians and reptiles, As well as the conservation of marine-
protected areas.

B. Ramon Camanos Berba- He was born on August 31, 1939. He was named a
National Scientist of the Philippines in the year of 2014. for inventing a way to
induce flowering in mango tress regardless of season and boosting the local
mango industry.

C. Tetchi Cruz- Cruz-Capellan is the CEO of the Philippine renewable energy


provider Sun Asia Energy Incorporation. And also the Founder of the Philippine
Solar Power.
D. Edgardo D.Gomez- Gomez was born on June 11, 1938 and was died on
January 12, 2019. He led the world’s first national-scale assessment of damage to
coral reefs, work which led to him being conferred the tittle of National Scientist
of the Philippines in the year of 2014.

E.Alfredo Mahar Lagmay- He was born on October4 , 1996 He is a professor at


the National Institute of Geological Science, and University of the Philippines
Diliman. He received the 2015 Plinius Medal from the European Geosciences
Union for his research into natural hazards and disasters in the Philippines, in
particular volcanic hazards, earthquakes, typhoons, landslides and floods.
F. Aisa Mijeno- She is a professor of engineering at De La Salle University—
Lipa in the Philippines. Together with her brother Ralph, she co-founded
Sustainable Alternative Lighting (SALt), a social enterprise that is developing an
LED lamp that runs on just table salt and water.

G. Reina Reyes- She was born on June 29, 1983 in Tokyo, Japan. She is known
for her work on The Hunted and The Kicks.
2. Examine What made them pursue in career in Science and present the
result of your work in class.

A. Angel C. Alcala- One of The reason why Alcala pursue his career in science
it’s because his father was a fish farmer, He took care of fish ponds that
provided steady supplies of milk fish to the local and neighboring markets. As
the eldest child, Angel helped his father take care of the fish ponds. Having
spent a lot of time near the coral reefs and shallow waters, it is evident how the
beauty of the sea captured the heart of AngeL.

B. Ramon Camanos Berba- His inspiration to study in this field came from his
grandfather, Juan Cabanas, who was then an official of the Bureau of Plants
and Industry (BPI) and Dr. L.G. Gonzales who is considered as the father of
horticulture in the Philippines.

D. Edgardo D.Gomez- As an archipelago with vast marine resources, Gomez saw


the need to protect Philippine resources in particular to coral reefs. That’s why
He led the world’s first national-scale assessment of damage to coral reefs
leading to international conservation initiatives such as replanting of corals. He
also pioneered giant clam (Tridacna gigas) breeding stationed in Bolinao and
other protective areas for coastal communities of the Philippines.

F. Aisa Mejino- The reason why she pursue her career is her main mission in
inventing the SALt (Sustainable Alternative Lighting) lamp is to change the
habit of Filipinos living in remote communities of using kerosene lamps and
candles.

G. Reina Reyes-The reason why she pursue her career in science it’s because she
said that she had a plan that After completing a postdoctoral position in
astrophysics at the University of Chicago, she would apply for a more permanent
academic position in the US. She said that, “I wanted to do something that has a
more immediate impact to society than astrophysics,” she says. “It is almost a
luxury that we can spend time in our lives studying the universe... For me, data
science was closer to building solutions that affect the lives of everyday people.”

3.What is your understanding of Indigenous science?

-Indigenous science is refers to the science knowledge of all peoples who, as


participants in culture, are affected by the worldview and interests of their home
communities and homelands. ... Cultural diversity suggests that Western Science
and Indigenous Science should be viewed as co-existing or parallel.

Practice?

* An innovative exhibition being developed by The INVESTIGATOR Science


and Technology Centre in Adelaide
*The exhibits will invite interactivity and participation to explore science
through Indigenous knowledge.
*The applied knowledge of Aboriginal cultures of Australia having sustained
both people and the Australian environment for so long offer a unique
contribution to science's technology practice.
4. Examine what made them pursue in career in science and present the result of
your work in the class?

*To present knowledge and information on Aboriginal science and technology to


illustrate the importance of this knowledge.

*To promote an alternative to Western perspectives in science and technology

*Present science and technology as an integral part of Australia's living culture.
