Lauren Aquilina uses the same lyrics from No More I Love You’s by Annie Lennox to
show two different ideas about losing a relationship. In one version of the song, the singer is at a
party, and in the other there’s nothing. The time in which each version was released plays a part
in why the songs were made. No More I Love You’s by Annie Lennox was released in 1995 and
uses her voice and other sounds to create a beautiful song. The second modernized version was
released in 2019. Lauren Aquilina's cover of No More I Love You’s gives a different perspective
on no longer loving someone that's completely different from the original by Annie Lennox.
At the beginning of the original song, listeners are brought to a mysterious place when
the beat starts and the singer says, “I used to be a lunatic from the gracious days.” She goes on to
describe how she used to feel so crazy from better days. “I used to feel woebegone and so
restless nights,” shows just how unhappy and restlessness can further indicate she wasn’t okay.
“My aching heart would bleed for you to see,” refers to Annie’s pain being seen by others, more
specifically the one person the song is about. Listeners could interpret this to mean that the
relationship is over and the song is from the point of view of Annie going through its end. She’s
reminiscing on how even during what should have been happy times, she wasn’t.
“Oh, but now I don’t find myself bouncing home whistling buttonhole tunes to make me
cry.” Annie’s saying that she no longer finds herself whistling these sad tunes that make her cry.
She’s obviously happier now that the relationship is over. When she says, “I used to have
demons in my room at night, desire, despair, desire, so many monsters,” she means that she used
to have so many thoughts and feelings that were the ‘demons’ in her room at night that caused
her to have so many restless nights. In Annie’s version, she’s clearly looking back on how she
was maybe not in the best place mentally during the relationship which might have been the
cause of her distress. The song ends with her singing over and over, “No more I love you’s,
changes are shifting outside the world,” while the music gets quieter and quieter. In the very end,
you hear her let out a laugh and it makes you realize that she’s moved on from the relationship
and is in a better place now. The video can further prove this because throughout it you can see
her smiling and enjoying herself as she sings this song that’s saying she’s better off without the
relationship.
Lauren Aquilina’s version of the song came out twenty-four years later, but it was made
for an entirely different audience. Her version uses all of the amazing lyrics from the original
song but makes a complete one-eighty on the tone of them. They’re the same yet almost
completely different at the same time. Even the video to go along with the ‘different’ lyrics is the
complete opposite of the original. Lauren’s video starts out with a blank black screen that slowly
fades into a blurry picture of what seems to be a fire. It slowly fades back into the black screen,
then fades into a different picture of stars, and continues to repeat this for the rest of the video.
The interpretation of this version is much deeper and sadder, and it’s especially clear since there
aren’t any major beat changes or many inclines in her voice and the music.
The biggest difference between the two songs is the messages they have and how they’re
conveyed. The music in Annie’s version is so much more upbeat and happy. It has different
sounds and beat changes that just make you happy. It’s further shown that this song is a happier
one because Annie looks happy and is having fun while she sings it. Her saying, “No more I love
you’s,” makes her happy because the end of her relationship was a good thing and it’s better this
way. People can listen to this song and it will make them look at their past relationships and
think that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing that it ended and it could lead to something even
better.
Although, Lauren’s is completely different. The music in her video is softer, doesn’t have
any major beats, and pretty much stays the same. It has very few changes in it and really only
does when her voice changes drastically. Her voice is softer and airier. This and the video not
really doing anything really captivates you and draws you in. The way she sings this really
makes you feel how much pain she’s in. Listening to this version really makes people think back
on relationships that they miss and maybe had very painful endings that they haven’t quite
moved on from yet. This is how Lauren seems to feel as she sings this song and you can tell and
Although many people enjoy both versions of this song, there is an obvious difference in
perspective from each version. Also, the intended audience is obviously different for each
version. The original is meant for people who when looking back on past relationships are happy
that they ended and are better without them. Whereas the cover is meant for people who when
they look back on past relationships are sad and feel pain. These songs are the exact same, yet
complete opposites at the same time just because of the change in music and tone of the lyrics.
