Lesson Plan: How to use Google and Google Slides

The Set up:


Topic: Students will learn how to use Google and Google Apps. Today, students will be learning how to
use Google Slides and how to submit their assignments in Google slides.

Unit Goals: Students will be able to use Google to find basic information and use and submit
assignments using Google Slides. Students are able to do both independently and can complete
assignments as homework accurately and fully.

Learning Objectives: 1. Students will know how to use Google to answer basic questions.
2. Students will know how to search using Google.
3. Students will know how to find Google Apps.
4. Students will know how to use Google Slides.
5. Students will review and expand their knowledge of descriptive words and how to copy and paste
images using their computers.
6. Students will learn how to submit their work using the Share feature on Google.

Materials: Students will need their Chromebooks, notebooks, and a pencil.

The Lesson: Time


Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Students will read slides on what they will be learning 5-6
(objectives) and asked to brainstorm what Google is. minutes

Step-By-Step Procedures: I. Students read objectives. 30-45


II. Students are asked to brainstorm what Google is. minutes
III. Students are taught what Google is and how they will use it in class.
IV. Students are asked to open their laptops and open Google Chrome.
V. Students are taught the different features of Google Chrome and what they are.
VI. Students are asked to look at their screens and identify with Ms. Bemoll the various
features of Google Chrome.
VII. Students use their prediction skills and prior knowledge of animals to infer that they will be
researching elephants in today’s lesson.
VIII. Students are asked to type elephants into their search bar and click enter.
IX. Students are asked to discuss what they found when searching for elephants.
X. Ms. Bemoll writes their findings on the whiteboard and reviews what they found with them.
XI. Ms. Bemoll shows a slide with general topics that are found on Google when searching
elephants and explains that there are answers to all questions on Google.
XII. Students read fun facts about elephants from the slide.
XIII. Students review description words and are asked to identify three objects: a cup, a
marker, and a puppy. Students are reminded what descriptive words are, growing their
knowledge of descriptive words and how to use them.
XIV. Students are asked to write three descriptive words about elephants in their notebooks.
They are given five minutes for this portion of the activity. Students then share the words they
came up with describing elephants. The class makes a list of words.
XV. Students are directed to go to a new Chrome page, click on their apps, open Google
Drive, and find their assignment (Google Slide) for the day in their shared folder.
XVI. Students are directed to type their three description words on the Google Slide.
XVII. Students review how to copy and paste, building on prior knowledge to a previous
lesson on how to copy and paste.
XVIII. Students are walked through how to copy and paste an image correctly and in the
correct formatting for assessment.
XIX. Students are walked through how to submit an assignment using the share feature of
Google apps.
XX. Students are instructed to open their homework slides and practice on their own in
groups.

Plan for Independent Practice: Students will be asked to complete a similar assignment 30
(different topic). They are allowed to use their group for help if they need it, but will each minutes
submit their own Google Slide as their homework. Students will be expected to know how to
complete the task at future dates.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Before moving on to the next lesson, students will be 10
asked to reflect as a class on their opinions of Google and Google Slides. Ms. Bemoll would minutes
ask students to share how they felt the lesson went and if it was easy/hard, enjoyable/boring,
and if they felt like they could do it on their own.

Preview: After studying and becoming proficient in Google Slides, students will then move to N/A
Google Docs and become proficient in Google Docs.

Special Needs Accommodation


Accommodation: The special needs student is high functioning Autistic and does not need to be in a
self-contained program. During independent work, the student will be assisted by me and given extra
instruction if needed. This is a user-friendly topic for all students and is step by step enough for all
students to be able to follow. The SPED student will be given extra direction if needed and addressed in
class to maintain focus and participation.
