Topic: Mandala Designs

GOAL:
 2020 New Jersey Student Learning Standards- Visual and
Performing Arts: 1.5 Visual Arts Standards by the end of Grade
5. Set goals, and own creative ideas that demonstrate all
different approaches to art-making that is meaningful to the
creators.
OBJECTIVE:
 Students will be able to explore various types of patterns.
 Students with be able to experiment and develop numerous skills
in multiple different art techniques and practices.
 Students will be able to collaborate with other students and
increase self-confidence through an increase of peer discussions
and refinements.
 Students will be able to apply, organize, and bring to life
different designs through their mandalas that communicate
information to a diverse audience.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Before the class begins, I will have a handout on each of my
student’s desks, that contain a circle, that is 7.5x7.5 inches.
2. To start class: There will be 10-minute lecture, describing the
history of mandala’s and how they can benefit the mental health
of students
3. 5 minutes of question time and students gathering any additional
supplies they might need
4. 35 minutes of working time, students will be able to begin working
on their mandalas. The example on the PowerPoint will be
displayed on the smartboard for the students to reference to.
5. 10 minutes of class critiques, where students will hang their
drawings on the board, complete or incomplete just to be able to
express the message they wanted to create. There will also be
time for the students to offer feedback to one another.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
 7.5x7.5-inch circle on a piece of 8x11 computer paper
 Blue and black ink pens
 Colored Pencils
 Crayons
 Markers
o (All of these supplies should be in the supplies that were
listed in the supply list at the beginning of the school year,
but all materials will be provided to students if needed)
ASSESSMENT:
My assessment will be each student participating in the class critiques,
identifying the message they conveyed in their mandala’s and showing a
deep understanding in the arts and self-expression.

Directions: After viewing all the examples from the PowerPoint we


went over; it is now your turn to create your own mandala! In your
mandala’s I would like to create a story that represents your life at
the moment! Enjoy!
