    1) Determine the actuating force and the braking capacity for the double internal long shoe brake
    illustrated in the Figure 1. The lining is sintered metal with a coefficient of friction of 0.32 and
    the maximum lining pressure is 1.2 MPa. The drum radius is 68 mm and the shoe width is 25
    mm.
    2) For the double long shoe external drum brake illustrated in the Figure 2 shown below,
    determine the limiting force on the lever such that the maximum pressure on the brake lining
    does not exceed 1.4 MPa and determine the torque capacity of the brake. The face width of
    the shoes is 30 mm and the coefficient of friction between the shoes and the drum can be
    taken as 0.28.

    3) Determine the torque capacity for the single short shoe brake Shown in Figure. The coefficient of
    friction is 0.35. Identify the shoe type (Leading or Trailing shoe)

    4) A double external long shoe drum brake is illustrated in Figure 4 shown below. The face
    width of the shoes is 50 mm and the maximum permissible lining pressure is 1 MPa. If the
    coefficient of friction is 0.32 determine the limiting actuating force and the torque capacity.

    5) An automotive-type internal-expanding brake is shown above in Figure 5. The face width of


    the friction lining is 50 mm and the coefficient of friction is 0.4. The maximum intensity of
    pressure on the lining is 0.8 N/mm2.
    Calculate:
    (i) The actuating force;
    (ii) The torque capacity of the brake.
    6) A simple band brake is shown in Figure 6 below. The maximum permissible pressure for the
    brake lining is 0.6 MPa. The brake band is 100 mm wide and has a coefficient of friction of
    0.3. The angle of contact between the band and the drum is 270°. Determine the tensions in
    the brake band and the torque capacity if the drum diameter is 0.36 m.
    7) The brake shown in the Figure 7 has a coefficient of friction of 0.30 and is to operate using a
    maximum force F of 400 N. If the band width is 50 mm, find the band tensions and the
    braking torque.
