Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
(This gives an instruction to the facilitator to orient the learners and
support the parents, elder sibling etc. of the learners on how to use the
module. Furthermore, this also instructs the facilitator to remind the
learners to use separate sheets in answering the pre-test, self-check
exercises, and post-test.)
For the learner:
(This communicates directly to the learners and hence, must be
interactive. This contains instructions on how to use the module. The
structure and the procedure of working through the module are explained
here. This also gives an overview of the content of the module. If
standard symbols are used to represent some parts of the module such as
the objectives, input, practice task and the like they are defined and
explained in this portion.)

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Biology. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:


 Lesson 1 – Effects of Decaying Materials to One’s Health and Safety
 Lesson 2 – Importance of Reading Product Labels

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. identify the effects of decaying materials on one’s health and safety
2. describe the physical state of people exposed in decaying materials
3. explain the importance of product labels
4. observe and read product labels.

Decaying materials when not disposed properly causes
pollution.

An action or process of making the land, water or


air dirty and not safe to use is called pollution.

WHAT’S MORE

Pollution is harmful to one’s health. Pollution is one thing that can seriously interfere
with the proper functioning of our body.
 Exposure to decaying materials will make people sick.
 Compost- are the waste materials that are recycles as fertilizer.
 Making compost is one way of disposing garbage properly. Waste materials
that are made into compost are not harmful to one’s health.

Most of the product are sold in plastic packages, boxes, glass containers or tin
cans. We usually bought in market or sari-sari store.

 People protect oneself and other members of the family from the household
materials by reading product label.

 Product labels give the product ingredients (to which someone might be
allergic). They describe the safe way of using the product, including the dose
(in the case of medicine).

 Product label warn possible dangers.

 They describe the proper way of storing the product.

 Product materials are classified according to their use.

What’s on Product Label?

 Date Marking or Expiration Date- this is the “used by” and “best use
before” date. It gives the date by which the food should be eaten.
 Product Name- it tells what the food is
 Ingredient List- it shows all the ingredients that make up the product.
 Nutrition Information- it shows the nutrients found in the product.
 Usage Instruction- these are the instructions for storing or using the product.
 Precautions
 Manufacturer’s Details- it includes the name and address of the
manufacturer, importer or distributor.
 Net Weight- it gives the actual weight of the food excluding the packaging.

Not all foods have product labels on them.


Foods that are fresh do not have product label.
