CHAPTER 1
One of the most important human traits to achieve objectives is self-esteem. The term
self-esteem means “reverence for self”. The “self” pertains to the values, beliefs, and attitudes
that we hold about ourselves. Having a strong will and self-confidence, decision-making
power and originality, creativity, sanity and mental health is directly related to self-esteem

positive or negative and pleasant or unpleasant. People with high self-esteem, usually feel
good about themselves and better able to resolve conflicts and are resistant to deal with
problems. That’s why it is important to improve one’s self-esteem for it is the key to reach
success.
Depending upon the success or failure and one’s reaction to every significant situation
in life, self-esteem grows stronger or gets considerably weakened. Increases and decreases in
There is a lot of students having low self-esteem. They even don’t trust themselves,
and sometimes they are just belittling and looking down themselves, and something like they
can’t do anything even they can, they are just afraid to show and to express about what they
know to many people because they are afraid of judgement. When considering self-esteem it
is important to note that both high and low levels can be emotionally and socially harmful for

the individual. Indeed it is thought an optimum level of self-esteem lies in the middle of the
continuum. Individuals operating within this range are thought to be more socially dominant
within relationships.
Furthermore, the main goal of this study is to have a depth understanding and to know
about the root causes, manifestation, and intervention of having low self-esteem among the
selected students of Alegria Stand Alone Senior High School. Hence, this study also
investigate the relationship between self-esteem and overall academic life. So that the
researchers were able to recommend something to those people who can benefit of this study,
and were able to improve their self-esteem by the help of this study.
The main purpose of this study is to identify the root causes, manifestation, and
intervention of low self-esteem. This chapter reviews the literature pertinent to low self-
Low self-esteem is characterized by lack of self confidence and feeling badly about
oneself. People with low self-esteem often feel unlovable, awkward, or incompetent.
According to researchers Morris Rosenberg and Timothy J. Owens, who wrote Low Self-
Esteem People: A Collective Portrait, people with low self-esteem tend to be hypersensitive.
They have a fragile sense of self that can easily be wounded by others. Furthermore, people
with low self-esteem are “hyper vigilant and hyper alert to signs of rejection, inadequacy, and

disapproval even when there isn’t any. “The danger always lurks [they] will make a mistake,
behave immorally or contemptibly. Life, in all its variety, poses on ongoing threat to the self-
esteem.”
While everyone’s self-esteem is vulnerable to other people, who may openly criticize
them, ridicule them, or point out their flaws. I would argue that an even greater threat to each

PROCEDURE
The study applied a case study in which it uses a qualitative research because it is
needed to have a narrative and provides descriptive data. Were open-ended survey questions
to collect written narrative data from participants. Additionally, the research questions,
methods, and instruments were developed and based during the process to develop data used
in combination to further the understanding of the topic. The sample size was small and the

necessary data; then it will be compiled and organized for the analysis and interpretation of

they are shy. Out of these, the major causes of low self-esteem are the overall aggregated
opinion of oneself at any one time and because of their mindset it leads them to have low
self-esteem because they are afraid that they are wrong and they will be judge by the other
people. This was supported as shown in the participant’s transcribed responses below:

Improving self-esteem takes a great effort and time but it only matters on you, yourself alone.
It is just about how you evaluate your abilities as a person. You are not going to change
everything at once in just a blink of an eye, so don’t be afraid to start small. Set simple and
achievable goals, and then start completing them with everything you can do. Encourage
yourself, trust yourself, don’t compare yourself to others because you are definitely unique
from them, neglect the judgmental people around you and make it as your motivation to
enhance yourself, know your strength and improve it, know your weaknesses and overcome
it. Keep positivity surrounds you and let it change yourself to a better version of you.
