WATYOKA COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a Nurse Executive/Senior Nurse Manager’s course that prepares the graduate for top nurse executive role at International, National, Central, Provincial and District Levels of health services. The focus of the course is on contemporary role demands on nursing management and leadership. Emphasis is placed on exploring knowledge and skills requirements for addressing current development in the provision of health care including practice models, their value and professional associations and networks. The fit between nursing management philosophy values, goals, tasks, strategies and operational configuration of hospitals and other health care settings is explored. The learner examines the current issues, theories, concepts and practical application of management principles, leadership behaviour and decision making within the context of Primary Health Care. The course outline is based on the assumption that students have had an introductory course in administration and management. Selected topics covered in this course are those designed to strengthen the students’ background for senior managerial roles., COURSE OBJECTIVES Successful completion of the course will be manifested by the students’ ability to :- 1. Analyze the evolution of contemporary status and future directions of nursing administration theory, research, education and practice. 1. Identify and discuss contemporary issues affecting health care and nursing and the implications of these issues to nurse administrators at different levels. 1. The Nurse Manager is expected to demonstrate critical thinking and higher level knowledge in the discussions as well as written assignments and end of course tests 25%.
b) Each student will select one topic in which she\he will lead the class discussion. The student will submit a summary paper highlighting the major issues\challenges and possible strategies to address the issues raised. 2. Final Examination - 2 hours 3 out of 5 questions end of year – 75% + 25% Total = 100%
